The theory§

This theory identifies Denna's elusive patron, Master Ash, as the Chandrian Cinder, whose true name Haliax speaks as Ferula during the troupe's massacre. When Kvothe gropes for the patron's name in Trebon, he reels off F-names, 'Frederick, Frank, Feran, Forue, Fordale', whose stressed syllables read aloud as FE-RU-LE, decoding toward Ferula or Ferule just as Kvothe elsewhere stumbles onto true names by accident, as with naming his horse 'one sock' before learning it had a white sock. The wind blows a leaf into his mouth before he can complete the name, a third occasion the wind seems to intervene around Kvothe. The surname Master Ash compounds this: a cinder is a live, still-burning ember while ash is its dead remnant, a deliberate pairing, and the Spanish translation's 'maese Fresno' (the ash tree) obscures the double meaning. The Cthaeh's calling a meeting with Cinder 'again' a twice-in-a-lifetime chance, and Bast's evident alarm in the frame, add support, though the very obviousness of the link invites the counter-suspicion that the true patron hides in plainer sight.

  • in the first book, we hear Haliax refer to Cinder as Ferula in the troupe's massacre scene. Later in the book, when Kvothe is guessing at names of Denna's patron in Trebon, he guesses the names "Frederick, Frank, Feran, Forue, Fordale". These names all start with an F and after his first few guesses some get very close to Ferula.
