Denna's secretive patron, identity deliberately hidden

also known as Ash, Bredon (suspected), Cinder (suspected), Denna's patron, Master Ash

Appearance§

The corpus gives almost no firsthand physical description, since Master Ash is glimpsed only through Denna's guarded references and the evidence of his abuse (recurring bruises and injuries on Denna). Visual clues are filtered through the candidate identities fans favor: if Cinder, the corpus imagines the pale, black-eyed, white-haired Chandrian of the troupe-massacre scene; if Bredon, an older, courtly gentleman with a distinctive walking stick (which the Cthaeh pointedly references). The deliberate withholding of his face and form is itself the point — he is defined by secrecy and menace rather than any settled appearance, a 'grey fella' whose true look is kept hidden.

Description§

Master Ash is the secretive patron of Denna, known only by an alias; the name is itself a coinage of Kvothe's, settled on after his failed attempts to guess it, and the patron's true identity is never revealed. He funds and trains Denna in music and commissions her work, most notably tasking her with gathering scattered lore and composing a song of Lanre that reframes Lanre as a wronged hero and Selitos as a backstabbing traitor, contradicting Skarpi's account. He sent her to perform at the Mauthen wedding near Trebon and afterward questioned her closely about who attended and what they looked like; over roughly half a year his interest drifted from Lanre, Lyra, and their stories toward the Chandrian specifically. He is physically abusive toward Denna, beating her at times in temper but mostly as a game, and at least once striking her with a walking stick; by her own account one such beating was done to keep her out of jail. Denna reacts with horror and deadly seriousness whenever he is mentioned, extracting from Kvothe a vow on his name and power never to investigate Master Ash, warning that it could ruin everything and that the patron would be furious to learn she had spoken of him. Threpe treats him as essentially a spy operating under an assumed identity. When Kvothe speaks the name, his mouth tastes of ash, and in attempting to name the patron he circles the syllables 'Feran, Forue, Fordale,' close to Ferule.
