plausible identity · popularity 146 · 2 source threads

A linked set of claims: Bredon is Denna's patron Master Ash (and possibly Cinder), the Lackless Box hides a piece of the Moon's name, and Kvothe is Meluan's nephew.

About: Bredon, Master Ash, The Lackless Box

Also involves: Denna, The Doors of Stone, The Archives, The Moon, Kvothe, Meluan Lackless, Naming, Cinder, Haliax, The Amyr, The Adem

The theory§

This bundle links several identity and object claims. Bredon, the Maer's courtly partner at the game of corners with his wolf-headed walking stick, is proposed as Denna's patron Master Ash, since Bredon vanishes from Severen just before Kvothe rides into the Eld to fight the bandits led by Cinder, and Master Ash is said to carry a stick; one version chains the identities further so that Bredon, Master Ash, and Cinder are one. The item sealed in the Lackless box is read as both a key to the Archives' Doors of Stone and a tangible piece of the Moon's name. Denna's investigation of a magic where you write things down and they come true is tied to the power Kvothe later loses, the box he can no longer open being where his own name is locked, leaving him as the diminished Kote. The bloodline thread holds Kvothe to be part Lackless and Meluan his direct aunt. Bundled side-claims propose the Amyr are the Adem on shared forearm scars and that Kvothe's Adem name Maedre is an anagram of Ademre, and that Cinder spares Kvothe because he needs him to overpower Haliax. Counter-readings caution that the 'Master Ash beats Denna' premise comes from the Cthaeh and may be a bent truth, that Bredon and Cinder share almost nothing, and that Felurian states the Amyr were never human.

Evidence§

  • Bredon is Master Ash. I think this is pretty self explanatory.
OP's core identity claim opening the chain.u/HailLugalKiEn
  • The item in the Lackless Chest is the key to the Doors in the Archives, and is also a tangible piece of The Moon's name.
OP's claim about what the Lackless box holds.u/HailLugalKiEn
  • Kvothe had his powers stripped by the magic Denna is searching for, the magic that you can write down.
    OP links Kvothe's lost power to Denna's written-name magic.u/HailLugalKiEn
  • it's more than likely Kvothe is part Lackless, as in, Meluan is his direct Aunt
OP's bloodline claim tying Kvothe to the Lackless line.u/HailLugalKiEn
  • Cinder is Master Ash, who is also Bredon. Bredon disappears right before Kvothe goes into the Eld to fight the bandits…the leader of which is Cinder. Bredon also has a walking stick, and we know Master Ash beats Denna with one.
Second thread chains all three identities with disappearance and stick evidence.u/ccdyb
  • Kvothe locked his name in the box that he can’t open, which is why he now goes by Kote and has no powers like when he was Kvothe.
Refines the power-loss claim: his name is sealed in the box.u/ccdyb
  • I don't think Denna’s master “beats her” with his walking stick. This assumption comes from the Cthaeh (who doesn’t lie - but bends truths). … I think “beat” in the Cthaeh’s line means to “win against” (as if in competition)
CounterCounter: the 'beats Denna' premise is a bent Cthaeh truth.u/un_acceptable
  • Bredon isn't cinder because the are nearly nothing alike and it doesn't provide any clarity to bredons actions.
    CounterCounter: rejects the Bredon-Cinder identification.u/TheLastSock

Tier reasoning§

merged Cinder/Bredon=Master Ash bundle into Bredon=Master Ash bundle; core walking-stick/disappearance parallel is plausible
