The grandfatherly Vintish noble who teaches Kvothe the deeper game of Tak

Appearance§

Bredon is an older, obviously noble gentleman, grandfatherly in manner, comparatively small in stature, with pure white hair and beard and owl-like eyes. He dresses in ash grey and dark charcoal. His signature accessory is an ornate walking stick topped with the carved, silver-handled head of a snarling wolf, which unscrews to serve as the capstone in Tak. He carries the calm, refined, slightly enigmatic bearing of faded court nobility.

Description§

Bredon is an older, plainly noble gentleman of the Maer Alveron's court at Severen who takes a liking to Kvothe and becomes his Tak partner. Through their games he teaches the deeper philosophy of Tak: not to play tightly but to be bold, dangerous, and elegant, insisting the game is not about winning but about playing a beautiful game. He carries a walking stick topped with the carved head of a snarling wolf, which he unscrews to use as the capstone when he plays. He holds estates in the north of Vintas, near the Eld, and is dogged by court rumors of pagan rituals conducted in the secluded woods outside them. Once a greater force in the court, he now keeps to himself and describes himself as one who plays a longer, more subtle game. Kvothe finds him grandfatherly and fond company. Bredon also explains Vintish political complexities to Kvothe, including how one person can technically hold multiple distinct titles, and discusses the branching of the Lockless family under varied spellings of the name.
