Selitos Is Iax and Haliax, and the Chandrian Guard a Hidden Truth

Selitos, Iax and Haliax are one figure, and the Chandrian exist to protect the secret that Lanre is not truly Haliax.

About: Selitos, Haliax, The Chandrian

Also involves: Iax, The Amyr, Arliden's Lanre Song, The Moon, The Fae, Cinder, Denna, The Doors of Stone, The Lethani, The Archives, The Sithe, Master Ash

The theory§

This theory collapses three figures into one, holding that Selitos is secretly both Iax, the shaper who stole a part of the moon's name and made the Fae, and Haliax, while Lanre is recast as the red-handed Amyr who kept the Lethani and is depicted on the Mauthen pottery. On this reading the Chandrian's true purpose is Selitos's own ends, to capture the moon entire in the Fae, and they destroy anyone who might learn that Lanre is not Haliax; the Amyr in turn prune all record of themselves to survive the Chandrian's hunt. The reconstruction runs against the received accounts: Skarpi's story, drawn from chapters 26 and 28 of the first book, has Lanre become Haliax and Selitos found the Amyr to oppose him, and lists Selitos, Aleph, Iax and Lyra as separate masters of naming. Felurian places Iax locked beyond the Doors of Stone while Haliax still roams free, and Bast reports that both Iax and Lanre, as distinct figures, spoke with the Cthaeh. The reliability of any of these tellings is itself uncertain, which is the gap the theory exploits.

Evidence§

  • Selitos is Jax/Iax, the man who stole the moon. … He is also Haliax. … Lanre is the red-handed Amyr on the pottery. The one who followed the Lethani.
OP's core claim: Selitos = Iax = Haliax, and Lanre is the red-handed Amyr instead.u/Psychological_Day625
  • The “purpose” of the Chandrian is Selitos’ happiness. Or at least, to capture the moon entire in the Fae realm.
States the Chandrian's true purpose under the theory.u/Psychological_Day625
  • The Chandrian destroy anyone who learn, or have the potential to learn, that Lanre isn’t Haliax. … The Amyr prune all records of themselves to protect themselves from the Chandrian.
Explains the hidden truth motive and why Amyr records vanish.u/Psychological_Day625
  • I have no evidence to support any of this besides a gut-feeling after reading each book at least 15 times, and cruising this sub for years.
OP concedes the theory rests on intuition, not textual proof.u/Psychological_Day625
  • If Skarpi's story is true then it's Lanre who becomes Haliax and Selitos who creates the Amyr to stop his actions. This is from chapters 26 and 28 of NotW.
CounterCounter: received account has Lanre become Haliax and Selitos oppose him.u/limitedfeed
  • “Selitos knew that in all the world there were only three people who could match his skill in names: Aleph, Iax, and Lyra.” NOTW Ch 26 … Not sure I buy that he is Iax based on that quote.
CounterCounter: text lists Selitos and Iax as separate people.u/gswblu3-1lead
  • According to Felurian Iax is locked behind the doors of stone while Haliax roams free. … Also, according to Bast both Iax and Lanre spoke to the C'thae. If Lanre is not a villain but a Amyr this would be irrelevant.
CounterCounter: Iax and Haliax are distinct; Lanre and Iax are distinct.u/Feisty_POLOLOSH
  • Another thing is he didn't steal the moon, only a part of her name.
Refines a factual premise: the moon's name, not the moon, was taken.u/Mage-of-communism
