Appearance§

Viari is a Cealdish man who goes armed with a sword and a long knife, with pale scars over his knuckles and running up his arms, marking a rough, active life unlike the pale students who work indoors in the Archives. On first sight he cheerfully mistakes Kvothe for Yllish, reading something Yllish in his features. He carries himself with an easy, friendly, worldwise manner, greeting Wilem warmly in Siaru.

Description§

Viari is one of Master Lorren's gillers, working in acquisitions for the University Archives rather than as one of the pale scrivs who sort and scribe inside. Where those students stay put, Viari travels abroad to track down and fetch rare and hidden books for Lorren, and is worldwise and well-travelled. Kvothe meets him once and briefly in The Name of the Wind, when Viari emerges from a meeting with Lorren. Though Cealdish, Viari cheerfully mistakes Kvothe for Yllish on sight. He carries a sword and a long knife, bears pale scars over his knuckles and up his arms, and greets Wilem warmly in Siaru, exchanging phrases with him and referring to the Yllish and the Ruh as 'One Family.' He knows Edema Ruh customs.
