The theory§

This theory connects Master Lorren and the storyteller Skarpi through the Amyr, proposing that Lorren's personal trip to Tarbean is in fact a mission to free or aid Skarpi after the Tehlin church arrests him. Lorren normally delegates acquisition of materials to his gillers, such as Viari who works in acquisitions and brings back books from across the world, so his choice to go to Tarbean himself, despite supply shops being available nearer the University, signals a matter requiring his personal attention. The timing aligns: Lorren announces the trip during Kvothe's admissions, shortly after Skarpi is taken by church officials, and Skarpi himself assures Kvothe that he has powerful friends in the church who will see to his release. Reading both Lorren and Skarpi as Amyr, or at least Amyr-affiliated, the theory casts Lorren's journey as the travelling justice's intercession, mirroring the Amyr's historical role. A competing strand notes the opposite possibility: that Skarpi, by publicly telling accurate stories about the Amyr, is exposing what the Amyr worked to bury, so Lorren may instead be travelling to silence or recruit him.

Evidence§

  • I always thought it was convenient that as Kvothe was going through admissions, Master Loren "had business in Tarbean" and thus was able to buy Kvothe's book and enable his admission. It's long speculated that Loren is one of the Amyr
Core claim: Lorren's convenient Tarbean trip, plus the long-standing theory he is Amyr.u/TheAus10
  • Lorren have a scheduled trip to Tarbean for supplies, but there are supply shops around the university. So it would mean that he needs to go for a matter that requires his personal attention.
Why a personal trip is suspicious: supplies are available nearer, so it must be personal.u/HerosCalling
  • He has gillers to procure books, and I am sure there are other ways to get his supplies other than personally taking the trip to Tarbean. So he is either gathering some sketchy supplies, or as you say, he has some personal matters there.
Reinforces that Lorren delegates to gillers, so going himself signals personal business.u/King_Esot3ric
  • which stands out because Lorren typically uses gillers to do the legwork for him, like Viari. So trace the gillers … He works in acquisitions. They bring back books from all over the world.
Adds book evidence: Lorren's giller Viari does acquisitions, so Lorren's own trip is unusual.u/Smurphilicious
  • Also it’s been theorized that Lorren is a member of the Amyr — what if Skarpi is one also? This would explain how he knows the story of Lanre portrays him as the bad guy.
Extends Amyr link to Skarpi, explaining his accurate Amyr/Lanre knowledge.u/HerosCalling
  • I'm guessing that Skarpi is at least affiliated with the Amyr and that they were the "friends" he called on to rescue him when he was arrested by the church officials.
Mechanism: Skarpi's "friends" who free him are the Amyr, with Lorren responding.u/TheAus10
  • Skarpi says he has friends in the church so Kvothe shouldn’t worry. To me this seems to suggest that someone from the church will be the one to free him. I can’t see Loren as being with the church, but maybe I missed something.
CounterCounter: Skarpi's friends are in the church, not the University, weakening Lorren as rescuer.u/Fickle_as_Cats
  • However it could be the opposite, Skarpi spreading the sort of stuff someone has gone to great lengths to cover up … In which case it might have more to do with Loren silencing Skarpi
CounterCounter: Lorren may travel to silence Skarpi, who exposes what the Amyr buried.u/Roblem42
