Viari Is a Disguised Amyr Helping Lorren Purge the Archives

fringe identity · popularity 79 · 1 source thread

Viari's pale knuckle scars are removed Amyr tattoos, and Lorren lets him prune the Archives of Amyr references.

The theory§

In The Name of the Wind, Viari, a Cealdish acquisitions agent who travels to procure books for Master Lorren, shakes Kvothe's hand and reveals pale scars running over his knuckles and up his arms. This theory reads those scars as the marks left where the red Ciridae tattoos of an Amyr were painfully removed, casting Viari as a hidden member of the order. It posits a standing arrangement in which Lorren, himself suspected of being an Amyr, permits the order to prune the Archives of references to itself, a purge made easier by the destructive Scriv War, while Viari feeds him books. The same scene shows Viari mistaking Kvothe for Yllish, taken as another quiet signal. The theory sits inside a broader cluster of suspicions about who guards the Archives: that Lorren alone may light a flame inside so he can watch for it turning blue near the Chandrian, and that Puppet, who hoards forbidden volumes, is the true Amyr presence. Objections note that the Amyr have been believed gone for centuries, making it strange for a hidden agent to tattoo and then remove the marks at all, and that Viari is the name of Rothfuss's own tabletop character.

Evidence§

  • When Viari sees Kvothe, he mistakes him for Yllish (coincidence? I think not...).
OP flags Viari mistaking Kvothe for Yllish as a quiet signal.u/NoGoodDM
  • highlighting a few pale scars that ran over his knuckles and up his arms
Core textual observation: Viari's pale scars on knuckles and arms.u/NoGoodDM
  • I bet Viari once had red tattoos where those scars are, and that he had to remove them (painfully) to not look like an Amyr. And he works for Lorren in Acquisitions.
OP's central claim: scars are removed Amyr tattoos.u/NoGoodDM
  • My theory is that Lorren has a deal with the Amyr: Lorren lets them prune the library of references to the Amyr (and the Scriv War helped to accomplish this), and Viari brings books to Lorren.
OP's mechanism: Lorren-Amyr pruning deal aided by Scriv War.u/NoGoodDM
  • I think Viari is bringing Lorren (who I do think is an Amyr) some books about the Amyr but Lorren doesn't tell him that he is censoring the information
Refines: Lorren the Amyr censors books without Viari's knowledge.u/MistCloakNight
  • But how would a few thin scars affect his Amyr tats?
CounterCounter: thin scars seem insufficient to cover full tattoos.u/GarnerDay
  • It would seem a little odd to tattoo your hand while trying to remain in hiding, then remove it again.
CounterCounter: tattooing then removing makes no sense for a hidden agent.u/terrorbyte66
  • The amyr are beliefed to be gone for quite a while right ?
CounterCounter: Amyr long believed gone, so why tattoo at all.u/Arcanel_the
