The Creation War
“The ancient war that ended the Ergen Empire and made the Chandrian”
also known as Blac of Drossen Tor
Appearance§
As a historical event the Creation War has no physical form, but the corpus surrounds it with vivid imagery: a war so terrible the world has never seen its equal, fought across the grand empire of Ergen, now faded so completely that even history books barely recall it. Its signature scene is the Blac of Drossen Tor, evoked through fan discussion as a battle against a black beast in black armor (or shadow), ending with the enemy driven beyond great stone doors. Associated visuals mined from the corpus include the buried four-plate door and rotting waterwheel of the Underthing, greystones standing as boundary markers, and the scorched ruins of fallen cities like Myr Tariniel and Belen.
Description§
The Creation War is the ancient, world-spanning conflict that consumed the Ergen Empire and now survives only in stories and legend, so faded that even history books barely recall it. It was fought across the vast empire of Ergen, home to the first namers and shapers, whose contemporaries include Iax, Selitos, Tehlu, Aleph, Lyra, and Lanre. The theft of the moon by Iax drew the powers of the world into the war, which had already been underway for a long time when Lanre's story begins. Cities of the empire were burned, among them Myr Tariniel, the last and greatest of the great cities. The war's climactic battle was the Blac of Drossen Tor, where so many died the sea was choked with blood and great beasts were loosed; there 'the enemy' was defeated and sealed behind the Doors of Stone, a victory won at the cost of Lanre's death and his subsequent restoration to life. The sealing of the enemy turned the tide of the war. Its aftermath scattered the Ruach, who survived and dispersed into the peoples that followed, and it set the stage for Lanre's transformation into Haliax and the later cursing of the Chandrian. Felurian tells Kvothe that the one who stole the moon predates the Fae and is shut behind doors of stone, tying the moon's theft to the war's origins.
