The Creation War began when shapers broke Iax's moon-powered Greystone Road, accidentally creating the Fae realm.

About: The Creation War, Iax

Also involves: Lyra, Selitos, Haliax, Aleph, Shaping, Naming, The Fae, The Moon, The Chandrian, The Cthaeh

The theory§

This head-canon reconstructs the Creation War as a conflict among the great powers serving Aleph, master of all the disciplines: Iax leads the shapers, Lyra leads the namers and singers, Lanre commands the namer soldiery, and Selitos tries to stay clear of the fighting. Its inciting act is Iax stealing the moon's power to build the Greystone Road, a network of waystones that let people travel swiftly between cities. The shapers also experimented with making and transforming life, producing the various Fae, which the namers tolerated only because it improved daily life. When the Greystone Road was accidentally broken, likened to the marred sygaldry in the freezer Kvothe later repairs, the breaking destroyed the road but inadvertently tore the Fae realm into being, and the war followed. At the decisive battle of Drossen Tor Lanre was killed and called back from death by Lyra's song of power, the resurrection that sets up his later fall into Haliax.

Evidence§

  • Iax stole the moon’s power and created the Grey Stone Road … It is a place where people could walk between cities very quickly.
OP's inciting act: Iax uses the moon's power to build the waystone road.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • He and the other shapers also f***ed around with creating life and created the fae or turned existing people into fae of all kinds. The namers didn’t like this … But they held their peace because it improved the quality of life.
Shapers also made/transformed the Fae; namers tolerated it for daily benefit.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • Then the Grey Stone Road was accidentally broken, I think very like how the freezer Kvothe fixes has marred sygaldry. … This destroyed the road as it was, but inadvertently created the fae world.
Core claim: breaking the road (marred sygaldry) accidentally tore the Fae realm into being.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • The shapers were responsible for this so a civil war began, the creation war (Creation of the Fae), and namers were on the opposite side.
The breaking sparks the Creation War, shapers versus namers.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • The biggest battle took place where the grey stone road had been marred, probably at one end: The Blak of Drossen Tor. … But Lanre was killed. Using a song of power Lyra called Lanre back from the dead.
Decisive battle at the marred road's end; Lanre dies and is resurrected by Lyra.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • *"Stone-road is ancient and busted Sygaldry"* check
    Commenter endorses the broken-road-as-marred-sygaldry premise.u/Sandal-Hat
  • what actual proof do we have that the Mortal World/Temmerant came first and the Fae was shaped after. I have a sneaking suspicion that it was Ergen, turned Fae by the shapers and the mortal world was made last
CounterCounter: questions the assumed order; maybe Fae predates the mortal world.u/Sandal-Hat
  • It's all about making a road from one side of the board to the other. This massively fits with the idea of the greystone road, and the linking of either end by the doors of stone.
Added evidence: Tak's road-building mirrors the greystone road and doors of stone.u/SaltyWhelp

Tier reasoning§

no change; the Greystone-Road-origin mechanism is its own speculative reconstruction, distinct from other timelines
