The Seven engineered the Tehlin Church to bury the angels' true invocation names and blunt their protective power.

The theory§

This theory proposes that the Tehlin Church was shaped or corrupted by the Chandrian to render the angels useless. In its cosmology, Aleph created the angels after the Creation War to keep peace between Namers and Shapers, granting them not omnipresence but the power to hear and answer when called, so that they must be invoked by specific true names to find and aid the petitioner. By layering historical truth with falsehood across centuries of doctrine, the Seven ensured that worshippers no longer know the correct names or the correct manner of invocation, neutralising the angels as a defence. The contrast in Tarbean between a crowd shouting "Tehlu" to no effect and a woman crying for aid in an older tongue is read as proof that mere utterance does not summon an angel, while Trapis' garbled story of Menda preserves twisted echoes of the Creation War. The theory connects to the broader pattern of names being dangerous when spoken, the same vulnerability the Chandrian themselves suffer.

Evidence§

  • The Seven corrupted/made the Tehlin Church to destroy the effectiveness of Tehlu and all the other Angels.
OP's core thesis: the Seven engineered the Church to neutralise the angels.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • Originally I believe the Angels were created to keep the peace between the Fae and the Humans, or as I see it Shapers and Namers … they need to be invoked so they can find people in need. This limits their power, but it also allows them to go where they're needed.
Sets up the cosmology: angels must be invoked to find and aid petitioners.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • Aleph made the angels in such a way that only certain words could summon them so that just saying one name would not be enough.
Key mechanic: correct invocation names are required, not mere utterance.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • the Tarbean kids are arguing about Tehlu, which they say over and over, but nothing happens. But, when Kvothe goes to the nicer part of town, a woman is grabbed by one of the “Demons” and she cries out in an old language (Temic?) for Tehlu’s aid.
Textual evidence contrasting failed shouting vs invocation in an old tongue.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • Trapis' story about Menda seems to reference the Creation War and the breaking of the Grey Stone Road … it probably twists way more truths to fit its moral than it presented for the sake of posterity.
Doctrine preserves garbled, twisted echoes of real history.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • By making Tehlu the central deity, they encouraged people to Invoke His Name. Every time this happened the Angels attention was divided … instead of 10 Amyr a month calling for aid in the most dire circumstances, they get called 100,000 times a day by farmers that hope for good crops.
Mechanism of neutralisation: mass invocation dilutes the angels' attention.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • Several times in the books the connection between Haliax and Tehlin priests are established … Two times Kvothe sees a Tehlin priest with a dark hooded robe. It makes Kvothe remember Haliax.
Links the Church's iconography directly to Haliax via Kvothe's reaction.u/Andrew_VanNess
  • using institution to eliminate and ubiquitize certain names is brilliant.
Commenter endorses the core mechanism of burying names via institution.u/fearizthemindkiller
  • I think the Chandrian and the angels are the same group described from different point of view. The Chandrian signs and the angels wings sound too similar
CounterCounter: if angels and Chandrian are one group, the corruption framing collapses.u/OldMysteries
  • What reason is there to believe Tehlu is real? Or did I forget something big?
CounterCounter: questions the premise that Tehlu/angels exist to be neutralised.u/lordberric
