Trapis
“Gentle Tarbean caretaker of street children who tells the tale of Tehlu and Encanis”
also known as Trapis
Appearance§
Trapis wears one long robe, so heavily patched and mended that its original color and shape are impossible to guess; it is the only garment he owns. He walks like an old man despite not being very old. Otherwise he is a plain, gentle figure who blends into the poverty of Tarbean, notable for the kindness with which he tends the sick and disabled children around him.
Description§
Trapis is a gentle caretaker in the city of Tarbean who nurses sick and disabled children in a basement, feeds the destitute, and takes in young Kvothe during his most desperate stretch on the streets, nursing him back to health when he is injured and frostbitten (NotW Ch. 21). He owns a single long robe, patched and mended past recognizing its original color or shape, and he always knows Kvothe, whether filthy or clean, by the child beneath the dirt. He is best known for telling the story of Tehlu, the lowborn Perial, their son Menda, and the shadow-faced demon-king Encanis, a Tehlin-flavored retelling of much older events that echoes the Creation War and the breaking of the Grey Stone Road. He keeps apart from the institutional Church, having been a priest on the losing side of the church split known as the Mender heresies.
