The silver pipes a musician earns by performing at the Eolian

also known as pipes, silver pipes

Appearance§

The Talent Pipes are silver and small enough to be worn as a pin-like token. Their silver gleam is their defining feature; they are valuable enough to serve as collateral for a substantial loan.

Description§

The Talent Pipes are silver pipes awarded at the Eolian, Imre's foremost music house, to any performer who proves themselves worthy on its stage; they are worn afterward as a token of accomplishment that marks the bearer as an Eolian-recognized musician. Kvothe earns his by playing 'The Lay of Sir Savien Traliard,' Illien's notoriously difficult crowning song. Mid-performance a woman in the wings, Denna, unexpectedly sings the answering part of Aloine from a song she has heard only twice, making it the night music first joins Kvothe and Denna. After winning, Kvothe tries to give the pipes to Denna, who refuses to take the silver Talent. He later pawns them to the moneylender Devi, who remarks she is fully aware of what they are. Few women have earned their talent pipes, a rarity Stanchion, master of the Eolian, notes.
