Imre
“The arts town across the river from the University”
Appearance§
Imre is a town separated from the University by a river and crossed via a bridge, small enough that Kvothe and Denna repeatedly cross paths within it. Its signature landmark is the Eolian music hall, and another is a public fountain set among cobblestones, the scene of the legendary killing where the stones were left visibly shattered. Its streets can be cold and hold dark back-alleys where Kvothe is ambushed. Overall it is a modest, walkable arts-and-trade town of stone streets, fountains, taverns, and music halls.
Description§
Imre is a town across the river from the University, reached by crossing a bridge, and serves as Kvothe's main destination for music, money, and Denna. It is home to the Eolian, the music hall where musicians win their talent pipes and where Kvothe performs. The moneylender Devi operates out of Imre after her expulsion from the University. Geographically it lies in the region of Belenay-Barrow, possibly built on or near the ruins of the proto-city Belen. Imre is best known for the frame-story legend that Kvothe killed a man by a fountain there, leaving the cobblestones so badly shattered that no one can mend them. The town is small and walkable, a place where Kvothe and Denna repeatedly cross paths, though Denna finds it an expensive city in which to live. In the frame narrative, Old Cob tells stories set in Imre, and its pronunciation is argued over.
