The theory§

This theory reads a piece of casual dialogue — Kvothe offering to cross the world to fetch a leaf from a far-off tree as thanks to Denna — as foreshadowing that he will travel to the Cthaeh, whose Rhinna flowers are a panacea, to heal the ailing Denna. The chain rests on Bast's account that the Cthaeh's blossoms 'can heal any illness, cure any poison, mend any wound,' on the repeated mention of Denna's damaged lungs, and on the detail that Denna once promised Kvothe a 'willow blossom' though willows do not blossom — while the Cthaeh's tree is described as resembling a willow. A parallel strand applies the same flower to Kvothe's own future hand wound. The chief counter identifies the 'singing tree' Kvothe longs to reach not as the Cthaeh's but as the Tahl's tree in Tahlenwald, where the nomadic Tahl heal through song; another holds that Kvothe's nonchalance while Bast lectures him about the Cthaeh implies he has already been.

Evidence§

  • When they meet in the Eolian and Kvothe is trying to ask how he can thank her for getting his pipes, one of the offers is to cross the world to get a leaf of the tree
Core hook: Kvothe's offer to cross the world for a leaf foreshadows the tree journeyu/6890
  • They talk about how the flowers of Cthaeh's tree heal any illness, and Denna's lungs are mentioned numerous times.
    Links Cthaeh's healing flowers to Denna's repeatedly-noted damaged lungsu/6890
  • I believe Kvothe is so nonchalant about the Cthaeh when Bast is reprimanding him is because he already knows everything that Bast is explaining. Bast is lecturing a seasoned vet.
Argues Kvothe's calm during Bast's lecture implies he has already visited the Cthaehu/6890
  • Pretty sure he already met the Cthaeh, and was burdened with a hot take on Denna at that time. Bast was beside himself when he found out.
Supports already-visited reading and ties the encounter to Dennau/sir4taye
  • Iirc the singing tree is in Tahlenwald. … Kvothe says he would go see the Tahl since they're a nomadic people like the Edema Ruh and supposedly can heal with their songs.
CounterCounter: the singing tree is the Tahl's, not the Cthaeh'su/MisterFerro
  • The I think will(?) Says something along the lines of if Kvothe can go to the singing tree then why can't he go to the Fae.
Context: links the singing-tree wish to crossing into the Fae, where the Cthaeh dwellsu/MisterFerro
  • Isn’t that a reference to the sword tree
CounterCounter: proposes the tree refers instead to the sword treeu/Admirable-Cobbler501
