Seven Hidden Figures in Kvothe's Life Mirror and Counter the Chandrian

fringe connection · popularity 421 · 1 source thread

Seven recurring figures who aid Kvothe form a hidden anti-Chandrian force guiding him toward his destiny.

About: Kvothe, The Chandrian

Also involves: Skarpi, Denna, Abenthy, Devi, Elodin, Felurian, Selitos, Cinder, Haliax

The theory§

This theory identifies seven recurring figures who aid Kvothe — among them Skarpi, Denna, Abenthy, Devi, Elodin, and Felurian — each arriving at a pivotal moment to redirect or sustain him, and casts them as a hidden 'anti-Chandrian': an inverted counterpart to the cursed Seven. Its mythic underpinning is the doom Selitos lays on the Chandrian, that their own names be turned against them, which the theory extends into a structural mirroring of seven against seven. It leans heavily on Greek correspondences: the play Daeonica echoes the Dionysiaca, the name Tarsus echoes the Thyrsus (the fennel staff, Ferula communis, of Dionysus), and since Ferula is also Cinder's name, the staff becomes 'the tool in his hand'. From these echoes the theory infers that Rothfuss encoded a deliberate Dionysian and mirrored-name scheme linking Kvothe's benefactors to the Chandrian. An alternative reading holds the seven are better understood as Amyr-like guides than as inverted Chandrian.

Evidence§

  • There are seven people that seem to support, and sometimes ‘move’ Kvothe when they need him to move. This may place the Chandrian in a different light.
OP's core claim: seven recurring figures support and steer Kvothe.u/Byiron
  • Tarsus sounds a lot like [Thyrsus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thyrsus), the wand of Dionysus, a staff of giant fennel (**Ferula** communis), making Ferula the tool in his hand.
Greek wordplay grounds the theory's Dionysian connection.u/Byiron
  • Another aspect I have to establish is that the names of the Chandrian have been turned. … Your own name will be turned against you … And by turned, I mean that their names and signs are the opposite of what they originally were.
Mythic basis: Chandrian names are 'turned', enabling the mirror.u/Byiron
  • Skarpi was important to Kvothe, because he’s the one who made sure Kvothe would leave Tarbean and head to the University. … It has always been a mystery how Skarpi knows Kvothe’s name.
Example figure: Skarpi redirects Kvothe and mysteriously knows his name.u/Byiron
  • **Cyfus** bears the blue flame (fire). “**Deoch**” is Irish for “drink” of “liquid”, the opposite of fire. … **Ferule** = **Bredon** = Master Ash = Cinder. … **Pale Alenta** (note the four syllables) is **Felurian**.
OP maps each supporter to an inverted Chandrian name.u/Byiron
  • What if they are not the Chandiran, but the anti-chandrian? Like Tehlu's angels. They guide Kvothe to his goal of defeating them. … If that angel was Brendon then it makes sense that he would know what happened to Kvothe while he was gone.
Refines theory: supporters as anti-Chandrian angels, explaining Bredon's knowledge.u/BreakfastBob99
  • Ferula is also Cinder's name... so there's that...
Comment reinforces the Ferula/Cinder link behind the Bredon=Cinder claim.u/qoou
  • Sorry but some of these are a bit too forced. I don't buy it.
CounterCounter: some parallels feel forced and unconvincing.u/VaeserysGoldcrown
  • While others' inputs about the alternate theory about these folk more likely being Amyr than the Chandrian seem closer to the mark
CounterCounter: alternative reading favors Amyr-like guides over inverted Chandrian.u/AFeuerInside
