The theory§

This timeline reconstruction traces the events that must carry Kvothe from Severen, where The Wise Man's Fear leaves him, to the diminished innkeeper of the frame story, and proposes that the decisive catalyst is his discovery that he is of Lackless blood and his rage that the heritage was concealed. The Lackless connection is already seeded: Kvothe's mother sang the Lackless rhyme, the Maer marries Meluan Lackless, and Meluan presents the Loeclos box, an heirloom Kvothe recognizes as twin to one his mother owned. Because the Doors of Stone lie on Lackless lands and opening them may require Lackless blood, the path to the box and the doors becomes the path toward his folly. The reasoning weaves in Kvothe's standing assets along the way, favors owed by Stapes and Fela and alliances with Devi and the Maer, and his oath to Denna 'on my name, my good left hand, and the ever-changing moon.' A significant objection holds that in the frame Kvothe gives no sign of knowing he is a Lackless when recounting how Meluan treated him, suggesting the revelation may not yet have landed.
