Stapes is a gentle, unassuming older man, a friend of the Maer since childhood, with the build of a grocer. He is reactive and visibly distressed by unsettling figures such as the guard Dagon, shuddering at his presence.

Description§

Stapes is the personal manservant and lifelong companion of Maer Lerand Alveron in Severen. His family has served the Alveron line for generations, and Stapes grew up alongside the Maer, becoming a gentle, unassuming, and well-connected attendant devoted to him. When Kvothe arrives to uncover who is poisoning the Maer, Stapes initially distrusts him and suspects Kvothe himself; he is caught concealing the dead caged birds whose deaths help reveal that the Maer is being poisoned. After Caudicus's deception is exposed, Stapes apologizes to Kvothe and befriends him. Before Kvothe leaves to hunt bandits in the Eld, Stapes gives him a ring carved of bone; Bredon explains that a bone ring signifies a blood debt. Stapes is reactive and visibly distressed by the unsettling guard Dagon, telling the Maer he wishes he would get rid of him. His name is also that of the stapes, the smallest bone in the human ear.
