Bredon Slips Between Worlds on Moonless Nights via Fae Doors

fringe connection · popularity 186 · 1 source thread

Bredon's absences from Severen line up with moonless nights, suggesting he travels to or draws from the Fae.

About: The Fae, The Moon

Also involves: Felurian, Severen, Maer Lerand Alveron, Denna, Kvothe

The theory§

In the gardens of Severen, Kvothe walks with Denna on a night with no moon, or barely a sliver, and a chapter earlier he notes that Bredon has left Severen several days ago to visit relatives, an absence he keenly feels. The theory aligns Bredon's departure with the moonless period and reads it through Felurian's account that the moon governs passage between worlds: there are a thousand half-cracked doors leading between the Fae and the mortal lands for those with the will and the way. From this it speculates that Bredon slips into the Fae when he travels, or draws something out of it. Supporting impressions are Bredon's fae-like amorality, a temperament neither good nor evil but bent on enjoying itself, his wolf-headed walking stick, and persistent rumor that he performs pagan rituals in the woods of his northern Vintish homeland. These same traits feed the parallel theory that Bredon is Master Ash, and thus Cinder, who shares ash-colored hair, a wolf-headed staff, skill at dancing and tak, and an absence from Severen that coincides with Denna's travels alongside her patron.

Evidence§

  • is a moonless night (or almost) … “There’s no moon tonight,” she pointed out. “Or if there is, it’s barely a slender sliver.”
OP establishes the Severen garden scene happens on a moonless night.u/navispacial
  • a chapter before (69 - Such Madness) is told that Bredon is not in Severen. … "Making things worse was the fact that Bredon had left Severen several days ago to visit some nearby relatives.
OP aligns Bredon's absence with the moonless period.u/navispacial
  • Based on what Felurian said, when the moon is at its right phase (full or moonless), both worlds (fae and mortal) are connected: … “there are a thousand half-cracked doors that lead between my world and yours.”
OP's mechanism: the moon governs passage between Fae and mortal worlds.u/navispacial
  • What if Bredon was trying to get to the Fae world when he is travelling? Or what if he is trying to attract somethig from the Fae world to the mortal world?
OP's core speculative claim driving the theory.u/navispacial
  • I feel like Bredon's behaviour is also very fae, neither good nor evil but concerned with having a good time
Comment adds Bredon's fae-like amorality as supporting evidence.u/Lawlcopt0r
  • He also has a wolf on his walking stick right? … The traveling when there's no moon and the wolf head might have some connection, not exactly sure what.
Comment links wolf-headed stick and moonless travel.u/TerraInc0gnita
  • There's also one of the gossip letters that Kvothe gets stating that Bredon has pagan rituals in the woods.
Comment adds rumor of Bredon's pagan rituals, reinforcing fae/occult reading.u/Raealina
  • Bredon goes out Severen at same time Denna travel with his patron. … Bredon has a staff same as Denna's patron and it has a wolfs head.
Comment refines toward the parallel Bredon-is-Master-Ash/Cinder theory.u/Visual-Ad-4728
