Kvothe Becomes the Cthaeh Through a Time-Looping Path to the Past

fringe identity · popularity 136 · 1 source thread

A half-joking theory that Kvothe travels to the past, becomes trapped in the tree, and is the Cthaeh manipulating his own story.

About: Kvothe, The Cthaeh

Also involves: The Fae, Tarbean, The University, Severen, Newarre

The theory§

This half-serious theory extends the familiar 'Kvothe is Taborlin' and 'Kvothe is Illien' time-loop speculations to their strangest endpoint: that Kvothe finds passage to the past and, driven by love or revenge, becomes a creature trapped in a tree by vigilant Fey — the Cthaeh — who from that confinement reshapes the world through carefully cultivated rumours and just-so stories. The reasoning is purely thematic: it leans on how Kvothe already navigates Tarbean, the University, and Severen by reputation and rumour rather than force, and on how his schemes leave him 'treed' like a cat, waiting in an inn at Newarre for a long-shot plan to bear fruit. It draws further play from the fact that only two names in the story begin with unpronounceable double-consonant sounds, and from Kvothe's refrain that there are many versions of this story but he likes this one best — read as a being who knows every branching path his tale could take. The theory is openly acknowledged as a narrative stretch, weighed against the Cthaeh's apparent immortality, its reputation for never lying, and the absence of any description of Kvothe with serpent eyes.

Evidence§

  • It's an oft floated theory that "Kvothe *is* Tamborlin" or "*is* Illien", etc. due to some looping time-travel mechanic. So, why not "Kvothe *is* the Cthaeh"?
OP frames the theory as an extension of existing time-loop identity theories.u/coglapis
  • Assume Kvothe travels some winding path and finds passage to the past and, due to haste and misstep and motivated by love or revenge becomes a creature unseen trapped in a tree by vigilant Fey. His one chance out is to shape the outside world with adroit and just-so stories and the cultivation of rumors.
OP's core mechanism: time-travel to the past makes Kvothe the treed, rumour-spreading Cthaeh.u/coglapis
  • Is that much different than using rumor and reputation to successfully thread the dangers of Tarbean, the traverse the rules of the university and slalom intrigues in Severin without too much violence?
OP argues Kvothe already operates by rumour and reputation, mirroring the Cthaeh.u/coglapis
  • Or so different from having one's schemes leave one "treed" like a cat in a inn in Newarre waiting for a long-shot plan to prove effective?
OP draws the 'treed' parallel between Kvothe stuck in Newarre and the Cthaeh in its tree.u/coglapis
  • There are only 2 characters whose names begin with unpronounceable double consonant sounds. I'm just sayin'
Comment adds a naming-parallel between Kvothe and Cthaeh as supporting evidence.u/pohl
  • Would explain “There are many versions of this story, but I like this one the best”. We take it to mean he’s embellishing, but in this case it would have a double meaning in that he knows all the potential ways his story could play out.
Comment reinterprets Kvothe's refrain as a being who knows every branching path.u/skirpnasty
  • If there were some kind of evidence it would be cool, but I don't think there are any narrative stances where Kvothe is described as having serpent eyes
CounterCounter: no text describes Kvothe with the Cthaeh's serpent eyes.u/TevenzaDenshels
  • The cthaeh is immortal afaik and Kvothe isn’t. As far as we know, no human can become immortal. Lanre isn’t immortal, just bound away from the doors of death.
CounterCounter: the Cthaeh's immortality conflicts with Kvothe being human.u/SirJohannvonRocktown
