Temerant
“The mortal world where Kvothe's story unfolds”
also known as the four corners
Appearance§
As a whole world, Temerant has no single visual form; it is rendered through its regions rather than a fixed look. It is a medieval, pre-industrial society of cities, roads, universities, and inns, harsh enough that a secure post is a rare privilege. Its cultures look and sound different by region, with distinct naming conventions marking Vintan, Commonwealth, and Cealdish folk. Its landscape carries ancient ruins and remnants, such as the Underthing beneath the University and scattered greystones, hinting at older civilizations that roamed the Four Corners before the present age.
Description§
Temerant is the mortal world of The Kingkiller Chronicle, also known as the Four Corners of Civilization, and the setting for Kvothe's entire story. It is a realm distinct from the Fae, with greystones and waystones serving as boundary points between the two worlds. A defining feature is that Alar, the ability to bend reality with the mind, is not limited to trained arcanists: even an eleven-year-old Kvothe learns to harness it, and ordinary people are assumed to carry at least a faint capacity, giving belief and song a tangible effect on the world. Sympathy, an equivalent-exchange magic that trades energy with a toll, is the most common and widely accepted form of power across the world. Temerant holds many cultures and regions, including Vintas, the Commonwealth, Ademre, Yll, and Ceald, each with distinct naming conventions and customs. Its history is marked by burned libraries, including the great library of Caluptena, with libraries repeatedly targeted for arson. The Adem are world-renowned mercenaries who export their service to the wider Four Corners despite their insular society. The mortal world is named in the title 'En Temerant Voistra,' paralleling the Fae-referencing 'En Faeant Morie.'
