The theory§

This theory holds that Denna is the moon, or a living vessel of its energy, bound to the mortal world. The moon in Temerant is split between the mortal sky and the Fae, drawn back when its trapped name pulls it across the border, and Denna's pattern of vanishing without warning and returning days later is read as the same crossing. In Severen she disappears and returns on the seventh day, telling Kvothe that sometimes it is the only thing she can do, an echo of a lunar phase. Her habit of always altering the second half of her name is reframed as a symptom of a name only half her own, the missing portion sealed in the Lackless box just as the moon's name was stolen by Iax. A parallel strand maps the Jax-and-the-moon myth directly onto Kvothe and Denna: she is described as more luminous than the moon during their first journey with Roent's caravan, and Kvothe's first performance on Josn's lute, when he felt something inside him break and music poured out, is read as unwitting naming that trapped her here. The connection runs through the box's Yllish-style inscriptions, which Denna's knot-braiding skill lets her read, and through Kvothe's own Lackless descent by way of his mother.
