The Lackless Family Is Engineering Vintas's War to Reclaim Their Ancient Lands

fringe motive · popularity 69 · 1 source thread

The Lackless house, heirs of Iax/Loeclos, secretly manipulates Vintic politics to restore their lost dominion and reopen the Doors of Stone.

About: The Lackless Box, Iax, Vintas

Also involves: Meluan Lackless, Maer Lerand Alveron, The Doors of Stone, Kvothe, Caudicus, Ambrose Jakis, The Creation War, Shaping, Aculeus Lackless, Roderic Calanthis

The theory§

This theory holds that the war stirring in Vintas during the frame story is no accident but the long game of House Lackless, the ancient Loeclos line descended from Iax, first of the Shapers. The Lackless family is older than the house of Alveron; a thousand years ago its holdings spanned pieces of what are now Vintas, Modeg, and the Small Kingdoms, and its name was something older still before it became 'Lackless.' Reading the family nursery rhymes as a buried genealogy, the theory takes 'son who brings the blood' to mean Iax sired a child before his imprisonment behind the Doors of Stone, making the Lacklesses both heirs of the Shaper and keepers of the conditions for reopening that door, the box and its key among them. Meluan Lackless's marriage to the Maer is recast as strategy: she is the one daughter beyond the king's control, and her line stands in succession to the Vintish throne, so a Lackless rise through Alveron could topple the Calanthis kings. The Maer, having already survived two poisonings, is predicted to die on the third attempt, with Kvothe blamed and named Kingkiller, lighting the war that smoulders in the present.

Evidence§

  • the Lackless family, headed by Aculeus, is manipulating events with the goal of restoring their ancient lands to their control. The house of Loeclos, the heirs of Iax, will rise again.
OP's core claim: the Lacklesses, heirs of Iax, engineer events to reclaim their lands.u/futremaline
  • Lady Lackless, husbands' rocks, son who brings the blood, all these suggest that Iax had a wife and at least 1 child before being imprisoned.
Reads the nursery rhymes as buried genealogy linking the Lacklesses to Iax's bloodline.u/futremaline
  • Lady Lackless kept her husbands' lockless box safe for the day that an heir would fulfill the demands and set Iax free again.
The box and its conditions are the means to reopen the Doors and free Iax.u/futremaline
  • The Maer on the other hand has been moved against twice, once by Caudicus with the poison and once with bandits. The third time will pay for all, and likely be his end.
Predicts the Maer dies on a third attempt, triggering the war.u/futremaline
  • When Meluan tells him that the Maer has proposed to her, he is pleased to agree, making the coming takeover far less bloody and rendering the failed poisoning inconsequential. He now has another chance for a "son of the blood" … as well as a legitimate path to take over the Alveron lands.
Meluan's marriage recast as strategy: a legitimate path to seize Alveron lands and the throne.u/futremaline
  • Aculeus is the Penitent King that Kvothe is hiding from. He is biding his time until Meluan's son is old enough to free Iax and the Lacklesses will conquer the world.
Conclusion: Aculeus becomes the Penitent King, war follows, awaiting an heir to free Iax.u/futremaline
  • I've always thought Ms Lackless loving Alveron was sus, maybe she is in it for the power for her family. They murder Alveron and Kvothe becomes "kingkiller" and enough people don't like the lackless rise to power and creates the current war
Comment adds support: Meluan's marriage is power-driven; the Lackless rise sparks the war.u/Unlucky_Feed_1637
  • It ignores some hints e.g ash is cinder or bredon.
CounterCounter: identifying Aculeus as Master Ash conflicts with Cinder/Bredon hints.u/TheLastSock
  • I think parts are a bit of a stretch, like putting too much just the Lockless family's plans and not enough on others. I imagine the Jakis's are also competent politikers.
CounterCounter: theory over-centralizes Lackless agency and underrates rival players like the Jakises.u/6ihavespoken9
