The frame-story monarch Kvothe's rebellion opposes, widely theorized to be Maer Alveron

also known as Penitent King

Appearance§

The Penitent King is known only by title and through the frame story's distant civil war, with no physical description established. The single visual marker is heraldic: the king's soldiers wear blue and white.

Description§

The Penitent King is a ruler in the present-day frame story of the Kingkiller Chronicle, the monarch against whom a civil war and rebellion are being fought while Kvothe hides as the innkeeper Kote. The nickname carries a religious connotation. The king's soldiers wear blue and white, and a band of them beat Kote at the Waystone Inn. Kvothe has earned the name 'Kingkiller' for slaying a king. In Vintas, Roderic Calanthis reigns as king in the capital of Renere, and Simmon's recitation of the Vintish peerage places the royal family, the prince regents, and Maer Alveron high, with Ambrose Jakis ranked only sixteenth. During his telling, Kvothe restores the ailing Maer Alveron's health and helps him secure the Lackless name and the Loeclos box; the Cthaeh tells Kvothe to stick by the Maer and he will lead him to the Amyr's door.
