A deliberately contrarian reading proposes that Denna and Kvothe share a parent, which would explain why their plain mutual attraction is never allowed to resolve. It builds on the moment Kvothe finds Meluan Lackless's features vaguely familiar: if Denna resembles Laurian, and Meluan is Laurian's sister, then Denna's familiarity and Kvothe's pull toward her would both trace to the Lackless line. The theory leans further on hints that Arliden ran off after entangling himself with Lackless women, and on Denna's account of nearly drowning very young, read as an attempt to dispose of an illegitimate child. The stronger objection within the same reasoning is the simpler one Kvothe himself supplies: Meluan looks familiar because she is his mother's sister, making Denna at most a cousin rather than a half-sibling, a relation that also better fits Cyrano de Bergerac, the work on which Kvothe is loosely modeled.
