Kvothe Binding Felurian With His Breath Reenacts the Shaping of Iax

fringe mechanism · popularity 73 · 1 source thread

Kvothe binding Felurian by weaving his breath mirrors how Iax shaped breath into a name, hinting at the moon's theft.

About: Kvothe, Felurian, Iax

Also involves: Haliax, Naming, Shaping, The Moon, The Chandrian, The Doors of Stone

The theory§

When Kvothe binds Felurian, he cups his hands, breathes a sigh into the hollow, speaks a name, and the breath bursts into a silver flame that traps her inside its 'changing name.' This theory reads that act as a small, witnessed demonstration of Shaping in the manner of Iax: a Namer takes his own breath and weaves it together with something else to forge a binding. The 'changing' quality of the flame comes from Kvothe weaving his breath with the wind, whose name is ever-shifting; Iax, by contrast, is said to have woven his breath with something that could not be trapped, and so was himself shut behind doors of stone. The reading draws a further line to the Chandrian pot, whose shadowed grey candle with a black flame is identified as shaped shadow, the same substance Haliax is wrapped in. The binding also recalls Kvothe's childhood near-suffocation when he bound his breath to the air on Abenthy's wagon, and the way Lanre bound Selitos, suggesting Naming and Shaping are two faces of one power.

Evidence§

  • we've actually seen what it would look like to 'shape' your breath and use it to hame someone.
OP's core claim: the Felurian binding shows shaping breath to name someone.u/Smurphilicious
  • I cupped my hands and breathed a sigh into the hollow space within. I spoke a name. I moved my hands and wove my breath gossamer-thin. It billowed out, engulfing her, then burst into a silver flame that trapped her tight inside its changing name.
Book quote OP cites: Kvothe weaves his breath into a name that traps Felurian.u/Smurphilicious
  • The breath of Iax. That's what it would have looked like. Kvothe used his breath and wrapped her inside of its changing name, her hair a dancing black candle flame.
OP equates the act with Iax's shaping and the shadow candle imagery.u/Smurphilicious
  • But Kvothe wove his breath with *wind*, whose name is ever-changing. That's why the silver flame had a changing name.
OP explains the 'changing name' as breath woven with wind.u/Smurphilicious
  • Iax wove their breath with something that had a little bone-tar / denner resin / plum bob in it, something that couldn't be trapped behind doors of stone
OP contrasts Iax weaving breath with something untrappable, tying to Haliax.u/Smurphilicious
  • Naming and Shaping are two of the strongest powers in that world. But I think that, in some way, they have to be related. Maybe changing the name is also changing the shape of something.
Commenter refines: Naming and Shaping are linked, supporting the mechanism.u/junglewolfdan
  • if Iax's breath (Haliax) is what has hamed Lanre/Alaxel, to me that implies that either Iax still lives ... or there is a version of "permanent shaping". In fact, wouldn't that be grammarie?
Commenter extends theory, identifying permanent shaping as grammarie.u/Acceptable-Dirt-5228
  • Very interesting idea that a powerful person can link a person's name to something else, like bone-tar, fire-damp, wind, breath, etc.
Commenter endorses the binding mechanism of linking a name to a substance.u/TrentBobart
