The theory§

The Lackless Box, the lockless heirloom Meluan Lackless guards in secret, is described by Kvothe as a dark wood with a deep red grain, resembling roah but seemingly spice wood, carrying a maddeningly familiar scent of spice and something almost like lemon. That same combination of spice and lemon recurs in his description of the air around the Cthaeh's tree, which smells of smoke, spice, leather, and lemon. From this matching scent the theory holds that the box is carved from the wood of the tree in which the Cthaeh is imprisoned, and further that the box itself functions as part of the binding that keeps the Cthaeh confined, with the object sealed inside completing the seal. The Cthaeh is not the tree itself but a creature bound to it, so the shared wood points to a property of that species of tree well suited to trapping things, possibly tied to the red grain reading as iron. A more speculative extension links the carving to Iax, who spoke to the Cthaeh before stealing the moon and may have crafted the box from its tree to hold the moon's name.
