Kvothe May Not Be the Biological Child of Arliden and Laurian
Cinder's taunts about 'your parents' hint Kvothe could be adopted, possibly Meluan Lackless's hidden child.
About: Kvothe, Meluan Lackless
Also involves: Arliden, Laurian, Cinder, The Chandrian, The Lackless Box
The theory§
On the night the troupe is slaughtered, Cinder taunts the hidden Kvothe with 'Where are your parents? Is this your parent's fire? Somebody's parents have been singing the wrong sorts of songs.' This theory reads the phrasing literally rather than as cruelty, taking 'somebody's parents' to imply that the singers of the forbidden Lanre song may not in fact be Kvothe's blood parents. From there it speculates that Kvothe was placed with Arliden and Laurian to conceal a scandal, possibly even born to Meluan Lackless, and notes pointedly that Kvothe is never given a surname. The thinner supports are Arliden and Laurian jokingly questioning his unaccountable talent and Ben's astonishment at his readiness for the University. The dominant judgment is that the line is simply Cinder mocking a terrified child, and that an adoption twist would add complication without payoff, though a minority hold open that Arliden, at least, may not be Kvothe's biological father.
Evidence§
"Somebody's parents have been singing the wrong sorts of songs" … Somebody's parents, *but maybe not Kvothe's.*
OP's core claim: Cinder's phrasing read literally suggests the singers may not be Kvothe's blood parents. — u/coglapisI had always kept open the idea that Arliden wasn't Kvothe's biological father, but what if Laurien also wasn't Kvothe's biological mother? Perhaps Kvothe is even Meluan's child! (Spirited away to avoid scandal or some such)
OP extends doubt to both parents and proposes Kvothe is Meluan's hidden child. — u/coglapisMakes it more interesting that we don't hear a last name for him.
OP cites Kvothe's missing surname as supporting circumstantial detail. — u/coglapisArliden and Laurian have joked about Kvothe's unbridled talent calling into question his progeny.
Comment adds the parents' own jokes about his talent as evidence of doubtful parentage. — u/Sandal-HatKvothes mom does tease his dad about not being his real father, and they both had brown hair and eyes while Kvothe has red and green. He could be a switchling.
Comment adds physical mismatch (hair/eye color) plus the teasing as support. — u/CastorTinitusWhat if Kvothe was a child that was locked away behind the Lackless door during the Creation war. … She thinks her parents have kidnapped the child and so she hides with the child in the Ruh's caravan.
Comment refines the adoption idea with a specific Lackless-door origin story. — u/RagnanicciThere's that one scriv that's one of Lorren's book finders that identifies Kvothe as one of the Ruh, so presumably he has at least one Edema Ruh parent
CounterCounter: textual evidence implies Kvothe is at least part Edema Ruh by blood. — u/elihuBut like why? Honestly, that'd just make things unnecessarily complicated with no discernible pay off.
CounterCounter: dismisses the theory as needless complication; dominant skeptical view. — u/MylastAccountBroke

Tier reasoning§
fringe correct: commenters themselves find it too speculative
