Meluan Lackless May Recognize Kvothe as Her Nephew

fringe connection · popularity 62 · 1 source thread

Meluan's intense hatred may stem from recognizing Kvothe as her sister Netalia's son, met once as a child.

About: Meluan Lackless, Kvothe

Also involves: Laurian, Arliden, Denna, Edema Ruh, The Lackless Box

The theory§

This theory proposes that Meluan Lackless's exceptionally violent reaction to Kvothe stems not only from her hatred of the Edema Ruh but from recognizing him as the son of her runaway sister. It builds on the widely accepted identification of Kvothe's mother Laurian with Netalia Lackless, the Lackless daughter who fled with a trouper, and on Kvothe's own sense that Meluan looked familiar. Rather than mere resemblance to his mother, the theory suggests the familiarity comes from an actual meeting: Kvothe recalls visiting his mother's relatives as a child, so he may have met Meluan herself, a decade younger. It further speculates that Meluan may have loved Arliden first, only to lose him to her sister, which would deepen her hatred of the Ruh, and in its most tenuous form floats the idea that Denna shares Lackless blood, linked by the Yllish-knotted heirloom she carries.

Evidence§

  • I know Meluan hates all Ruh, but I was wondering if she recognized Kvothe when he claimed to be Edema Ruh. If the bone ring wasn't just because he's Edema and wooed her through words and music, but it was especially because she realized Kvothe as her sister's son.
OP's core claim: Meluan's reaction was personal recognition, not just hatred of the Ruh.u/WednesdaysFoole
  • This, of course, depends on theories floating around. The most apparent being that Laurean is Netalia Lackless
Foundation: the theory rests on Kvothe's mother being the runaway Lackless sister.u/WednesdaysFoole
  • if that theory is true, then is the reason Meluan is familiar, not because she looks like Laurean, but because he *actually met her as a child*? It mentions that he visited his mom's relatives as a child.
Key evidence: Kvothe's sense of familiarity may come from an actual childhood meeting.u/WednesdaysFoole
  • Furthermore, an interesting old theory I saw is that perhaps Meluan loved Arliden first. … Either she was with Arliden first, or she was infatuated but he either dumped her or didn't love her and then her sister went off with him, which would explain the extremity of her hatred towards the Ruh.
Refinement: a love-triangle motive would explain the extreme depth of her hatred.u/WednesdaysFoole
  • If they did meet, her eyes going from shock to disgust could signify recognition, of his rare red hair, of his eyes that he got from his mom.
OP reads Meluan's shock-to-disgust as recognition via inherited features.u/WednesdaysFoole
  • IIRC Kvothe straight up says during their confrontation something along the line of "you're not pissed because your sister ran off with them you're probably pissed because you opened your legs first but they liked your sister more!"
    Comment supplies in-text support for the love-triangle / personal-jealousy motive.u/RepliesAreDisabled
  • I always assumed Meluan’s hatred stemmed from her having to shoulder the responsibility of the eldest daughter after Laurean left - as the younger sister, she would/should have been able to marry for reasons other than duty. But with Laurean gone...
CounterCounter: offers an alternative, non-recognition explanation for Meluan's hatred.u/Desideratta
  • Kvothe is 16 when he meets Meluan and finds her familiar. That would mean that Netalia would had left the Lackless family 17 years before, when Meluan was no more than 10 years old. … I do not think Meluan could have been more than 11 when Kvothe met her for the first time.
CounterCounter: timeline math makes a memorable childhood meeting implausible.u/Vardil
