Meluan's intense hatred may stem from recognizing Kvothe as her sister Netalia's son, met once as a child.

The theory§

This theory proposes that Meluan Lackless's exceptionally violent reaction to Kvothe stems not only from her hatred of the Edema Ruh but from recognizing him as the son of her runaway sister. It builds on the widely accepted identification of Kvothe's mother Laurian with Netalia Lackless, the Lackless daughter who fled with a trouper, and on Kvothe's own sense that Meluan looked familiar. Rather than mere resemblance to his mother, the theory suggests the familiarity comes from an actual meeting: Kvothe recalls visiting his mother's relatives as a child, so he may have met Meluan herself, a decade younger.   • Furthermore, an interesting old theory I saw is that perhaps Meluan loved Arliden first. … Either she was with Arliden first, or she was infatuated but he either dumped her or didn't love her and then her sister went off with him, which would explain the extremity of her hatred towards the Ruh.

  • I always assumed Meluan’s hatred stemmed from her having to shoulder the responsibility of the eldest daughter after Laurean left - as the younger sister, she would/should have been able to marry for reasons other than duty. But with Laurean gone...
