Maedre's third meaning, 'The Broken Tree,' hints Kvothe is a broken branch of the ancient Lackless line.

About: Kvothe, Meluan Lackless

Also involves: The Adem, Laurian, The Lackless Box, Haliax, Lyra, Cinder, Naming

The theory§

Among the Adem, Kvothe is called Maedre, a name that, depending on how it is spoken, means "The Flame," "The Thunder," or "The Broken Tree." Kvothe dismisses the first two as plain references to his red hair and trained baritone, but admits the third "could be considered at least partially prophetic." The leading reading takes "The Broken Tree" as a genealogical sign: that Kvothe is a broken offshoot of the ancient Lackless line, his family tree severed by exile and obscurity, possibly tracing back to Lanre and Lyra. On this reading his unrecognized kinship to Meluan Lackless is no coincidence but the literal meaning of his Adem name, and the "prophetic" sense points to his future breaking of a royal family tree through the killing of a king. Competing readings ground the name more literally in the lightning-blasted tree left when he defeated Cinder, in his pyromaniac temper, or in some future act against the Cthaeh's tree in the Fae.

Evidence§

  • I’ve never thought of “The Broken Tree” as very significant. Although in retrospect I suppose it could be considered at least partially prophetic.
OP flags the third meaning as overlooked but possibly prophetic, the core hooku/MertSaruhan
  • A fairly generous interpretation of the Broken Tree is that Kvothe is a broken offshoot of the ancient Lackless Family going all the way to (I'm theorizing) Lanre and Lyra. Basically, he's a Lackless.
Central claim: Broken Tree means Kvothe is a severed branch of the Lackless lineu/Kit-Carson
  • Or, does present day Kvothe _still not know Meluan is his aunt?
Ties the name to Kvothe's unrecognized kinship with Meluan Lacklessu/Kit-Carson
  • This one I read as foretelling his eventual killing of King Roderic. He broke _their_ family tree. Hence, the "partially".
Explains the prophetic sense as breaking a royal family tree by killing a kingu/Kit-Carson
  • It could refer to Kvothe's Lackless heritage, and perhaps it's possibly to create a crisis of succession.
Independent corroboration linking the name to Lackless heritage and successionu/CoffeePurist
  • He got his Ademic name AFTER he defeated Cinder in the woods by destroying a tree with lightning. Seems pretty obvious how Magwyn settled on his name.
CounterCounter: the name is literal, from the lightning-blasted tree, not genealogicalu/Ravingrook
  • I mean, he says he doesn't think of it as significant, and ascribes to it only partial propheticity. *Literally*, it isn't.
CounterCounter: downplays significance, noting Kvothe himself only grants it partial meaningu/aerojockey
