Skarpi Is a Rogue Amyr Who Defies the Order

fringe identity · popularity 53 · 1 source thread

Skarpi is an Amyr telling unsanctioned stories, explaining why the Amyr-controlled Church only arrests rather than kills him.

The theory§

This theory proposes that the storyteller Skarpi is himself an Amyr who operates on his own judgment, telling stories the order has not sanctioned—a rogue acting outside the chain of command. It assumes the Amyr secretly control the Tehlin Church, and argues this would explain why the Church merely arrests Skarpi, repeatedly, rather than killing or silencing him: he is one of their own, and influential enough to be handled leniently. Skarpi's survival is read as genuinely uncharacteristic of an order ruthless enough to prune its own history. The chief tension in the theory is that Skarpi's stories cast Selitos and the founding of the Amyr in a heroic light and tell truths the order seems determined to suppress—so a loyal-but-secretive Amyr would have little reason to broadcast accurate accounts in public. Kvothe himself undercuts Skarpi's reliability, calling him a rumormonger, which both weakens the 'tells the true history' objection and complicates trusting his account of the Amyr's origins.

Evidence§

  • For this theory I'm assuming that the Amyr control the Thelin Church and that Skarpi is part of the Amyr.
OP's founding assumptions: Amyr run the Church and Skarpi is Amyr.u/Loucuca
  • So, Skarpi is telling stories, but these stories are not approved by the Amyr. That's why the Church arrests him.
Core claim: unsanctioned stories explain the arrests.u/Loucuca
  • He knows he can get away, so he keeps doing what he thinks is best for their objective. Even when it goes against the Amyr. Skarpi is Amyr, but he has his own way of doing things. He is a rogue Amyr.
Refines theory: Skarpi acts on own judgment, defying the order.u/Loucuca
  • I was wondering why the hell is Skarpi alive. Given what we know of the Amyr, they seemed very uncharacteristically lenient with Skarpi given that he's well alive or at the very least whole.
Adds support: Skarpi's survival is uncharacteristically lenient for the Amyr.u/The_New_New
  • And it's been implied he has been arrested often. Now I don't know if your theory is the case, but he definitely is someone influential. One of those "your boss knows me" kind of guys
Supports leniency: repeated arrests plus influence suggest insider status.u/The_New_New
  • Is he Qui-Gon or is he Count Dooku on the verge of Separating?
CounterCounter: questions whether Skarpi is loyal-rogue or actually turning against the order.u/ConsortByNew
  • Skarpi is a Rhinta shot like an arrow into the world by the Cthae to bring Kvothe into the fold
CounterCounter: alternative identity for Skarpi, not an Amyr at all.u/NRichYoSelf
