Kvothe Returned to Felurian and Aged Decades in the Fae

plausible timeline · popularity 100 · 1 source thread

Kote seems far older than his twenties because he kept his promise to return to Felurian and spent decades or more in the Fae.

About: Kvothe, Felurian, The Fae

Also involves: Bast, Chronicler, The Chandrian

The theory§

As the innkeeper Kote, Kvothe seems far older than his years: people are surprised to learn he is only in his twenties, and Bast regards him as an aged mentor, while Kote calls both Chronicler and Bast young for still holding hope. This theory holds that his apparent age is not merely burnout and grief but the literal effect of returning to Felurian in the Fae, where time runs at a vastly different rate. Because a near-year with Felurian passed as only three days in the mortal world, even a modest stay on a later visit could age him by decades, leaving an old man inside a young body. The reasoning rests on the promises Felurian pressed him to make to return, and on the difficulty of escaping her a second time without the leverage of a held song. A counter notes that Kvothe seemed to slip past each demanded promise with flattery rather than truly swearing to return.

Evidence§

  • Kote seems old. There are multiple mentions of it - people are surprised he's only in his twenties, Bast sees him as a mentor despite his age. Kote himself says both the Chronicler and Bast are so young, when they have hope for his future.
OP's core observation: Kote appears far older than his twenties.u/JackofScarlets
  • I initially assumed this was just because he was burnt out from everything that happens in book three … But he did make a very clear promise in the fae, to a fae, that he'd return. What if he did? What if he's actually much, much older than he looks?
OP rejects burnout explanation, points to his promise to return to the Fae.u/JackofScarlets
  • its heavily implied that he went back to ol lady-love. he probably spent decades in the fae. he forgot all he new, dudes probably 80+ running a 20-something year olds body. dude acts like my grandpappy.
Supports return to Felurian causing decades of aging in a young body.u/Waylork
  • This would mean the 3 days Kvothe spent in the Fae was about 3/4 a year. If Bast was 150 years old, that would take 600 Temerant days, less than 2 years. I believe Kvothe went into the fae after kingkilling and lived with Felurian for about 2 Temerant years, or about 200 years of fae time … This makes Kvothe about 220 years old, explain why he calls 150-year-old Bast and middle-aged chronicler 'so young'.
Quantifies Fae time dilation to explain his apparent extreme age.u/chainsawx72
  • Well, if he spent almost a year there and only three days passed in real life…I think he does go back
Reaffirms the time-dilation math (near-year felt as three days) supporting aging.u/PresidentRaggy
  • I think he states in the story (not the frame) that he doesn’t think he could get away from her a second time. … Elodin says that he couldn’t possibly have subdued her with *only* wind.
Argues a second escape from Felurian would be hard, implying a long stay.u/iron_red
  • I like this one but how did he escape from felurian this time? He can’t hold a song hostage this time.
CounterCounter: questions how he could escape Felurian without the song leverage.u/Natsu_FireDragon
  • Did he clearly promise though? I remember thinking every time felurian asked him to promise he'd return, he avoided the promise and instead made a flattering comment... I remember thinking that he wiggled out of each promise...
CounterCounter: disputes the premise that Kvothe truly swore to return.u/ArmyCompetitive
