The theory§

This fringe theory proposes that Kote hides in Newarre to escape an army of Adem mercenaries he unknowingly infected with a Fae-borne sexually transmitted disease contracted from Felurian. Felurian has drawn travellers into the Fae for thousands of years, lying with them until they go mad or die, which makes her a plausible vector for an exotic pathogen. The Adem maintain no immunity to outside disease because their society is sexually open yet sealed from such infections, so a contagion Kvothe carried out of the Fae could in principle spread swiftly once he lay with Adem partners. Given Penthe's blunt declaration of what she would do to anyone who infected her, an army of skilled killers with cause for vengeance would be reason enough to disappear. The theory is offered largely in jest, with alternative origins floated — a more ordinary infection from Losi at the Pennysworth Inn — or the playful inversion that Felurian's attentions left Kvothe's sexual health enhanced rather than diseased.
