Master Herma
“The Chancellor of the University and Master Linguist”
also known as Herma, Master Herma, Master Linguist, the Chancellor
Appearance§
Herma carries himself as a commanding, composed presence at the masters' table, the figure who silences disputes with a look and directs formal proceedings. By the events of The Wise Man's Fear he has grown sickly, having fallen ill.
Description§
Master Herma is the Chancellor of the University and its Master Linguist, one of the nine masters who sit at the masters' table. He presides over formal proceedings, including admissions interviews, grievances, and Kvothe's trial in 'On the Horns', and wields quiet authority, silencing other masters with a single look and steering the table when its discussions grow heated. He personally teaches Kvothe the Yllish language. It is Herma who delivers the principle, quoted from Kvothe's admissions, that the University exists to continue one's education rather than to begin it.
