Appearance§

Hemme is a middle-aged man seated among the masters of the University in their formal robes. He is blustering and quick to take offense, with a sneering hostility and pompous, browbeating manner, given to bullying students.

Description§

Master Hemme is one of the nine masters of the University, holding the chair of Master Rhetorician, responsible for rhetoric and logic. He first appears in Kvothe's admissions interview, curtly demanding that Kvothe name the nine prime fallacies, and quickly becomes Kvothe's most openly contemptuous enemy among the faculty, calling him a "filthy Ruh bastard." Their feud escalates when Elodin has Kvothe unlock Hemme's rooms; Kvothe takes Hemme's hair and, in a sympathy demonstration, uses a wax doll and brazier to publicly blister Hemme's foot. Hemme retaliates by bringing a formal grievance before all nine masters, and Kvothe is put on trial and whipped for the malfeasance. Hemme typically votes alongside Master Brandeur, and when Chancellor Herma falls ill he steps into authority and acts in his place. He gives Kvothe the textbook Rhetoric and Logic, which falls under his domain, and reports the Yllish as having a different lunar cycle from the rest of the Four Corners.
