Folly Is a Bright-Sword Early-Warning System for the Chandrian

plausible mechanism · popularity 239 · 1 source thread

Kvothe displays Folly prominently because the children's rhyme says a bright sword turning to rust signals the Chandrian are near.

About: Folly, The Chandrian

Also involves: Kvothe, Cinder, Waystone Inn

The theory§

This theory holds that Folly, the dull gray-white slender blade Kvothe mounts on its wooden display in the Waystone Inn, is deliberately placed as an early-warning device against the Chandrian rather than being Cinder's captured sword. The children's rhyme lists 'When your bright sword turns to rust, who to trust?' among the telltale signs of Chandrian presence, alongside the hearthfire turning blue and metal blackening, and Folly is a bright, slender, reflective blade that would visibly rust at their approach. This stands against the rival 'Folly is Cinder's sword' reading, since Cinder's blade is repeatedly described as pale yet light-absorbing, drinking the firelight rather than reflecting it, where Folly is plainly bright. The reading dovetails with the 'It's a Trap' theory and the thrice-locked chest: a rusting Folly could be the signal that the Chandrian are near and that whatever the chest guards must be opened, and the name 'Folly' is parsed both as Kvothe's own past mistakes and as the Chandrian's coming error in underestimating him.

Evidence§

  • A common theory is that Folly, Kvothe's sword in the Waystone Inn, is actually Cinder's sword. I don't think this is true.
OP frames the rival reading he aims to refute.u/andrewfoxxx
  • Cinder's sword is specifically described as being similar to his eyes (which are dark) and not reflecting the light of the fire or the setting sun. It's safe to assume this sword is dark. It's definitely not bright.
Cinder's blade is dark and light-absorbing, not bright.u/andrewfoxxx
  • Folly is described as a dull, gray-white, slender blade. This does not match the description of Cinder sword. It's safe to assume this sword is bright.
Folly is a bright blade, unlike Cinder's sword.u/andrewfoxxx
  • When your bright sword turns to rust? … Who to trust? Who to trust? … What's their plan? What's their plan? … Chandrian. Chandrian.
The children's rhyme lists a rusting bright sword as a Chandrian sign.u/andrewfoxxx
  • A bright sword turning to rust is a specific example of a telltale sign that the Chandrian are near. I believe Folly is the bright sword—displayed in the Waystone Inn to warn of the Chandrian's presence.
Core claim: Folly is displayed as an early-warning device.u/andrewfoxxx
  • Is the sword named Folly to represent Kvothe's folly that lead him to hiding in the Waystone Inn, or does it represent the Chandrian's future folly for possibly underestimating him and falling for his trap?
Name 'Folly' parsed as Kvothe's mistake or the Chandrian's coming error.u/andrewfoxxx
  • Could it be that the locks are designed to fail only in the presence of the chandrian giving kvothe access to what he needs to fight them. … If Folly turns to rust this is the sign kvothe needs to know he can access the chest
Refines theory: rusting Folly signals access to the thrice-locked chest.u/PunkyMcGrift
  • Actually, the first thing said about Cinder's sword was "His sword was pale and elegant". … Folly is almost certainly Cinder's sword.
CounterCounter: Cinder's pale blade matches Folly; it is Cinder's sword.u/Ragnanicci
  • don't all swords rust when the Chandran are around? Why would you need a special sword to rust as a warning?
CounterCounter: if all swords rust near Chandrian, no special sword is needed.u/AntithesisJesus
