Kvothe Is Deliberately Painting Targets on His Friends by Telling His Story
By dictating a tell-all naming everyone close to him, Kvothe may be intentionally endangering people who were secretly his enemies.
About: Kvothe, Chronicler
The theory§
Kvothe is a hunted Kingkiller, pursued by men and worse things, yet at the Waystone Inn he dictates a tell-all account naming everyone who ever mattered to him. This theory holds that such an account, once copied and distributed, would paint targets on his loved ones, either as bait to lure him out or as victims to punish and torment him. From this it reasons that the story is no innocent confession: that his so-called friends were in truth his enemies, that he has lied throughout, and that he is deliberately marking them for harm. The reasoning leans on how casually Kote divulges secrets he should never share, including the hidden ways of the Adem, his Adem name, and the Lackless box, which would be reckless unless the telling itself is a weapon. A counter-current holds that the telling is instead an act of war on the Chandrian, spreading their names so widely they lose the power that comes from being seldom spoken of.
Evidence§
Kvothe is apparently a Kingkiller and hunted by men and things, yet he is dictating a tell all story of his life. If it gets copied and distributed, it would likely put everyone he was close to in danger since it contains the details of how much specific people meant to him
OP's core premise: the distributed story endangers everyone close to Kvothe. — u/vercertorixeither as either targets meant to punish and torment him or to use as bait to lure him out
Two mechanisms by which his loved ones become useful to his enemies. — u/vercertorixhe's being crafty, his “friends” were actually his enemies, he's lied about a lot of the story, and he's purposely painting targets on them
OP's central claim: deliberate marking of secret enemies disguised as friends. — u/vercertorixKvothe outright lying to the chronist would also explain why he is so casual about telling him stuff that according to his own story, he should never ever tell him: like the secrets of the Adem and his true (adem) name, university stuff, the lackless box etc.
Comment refines theory: reckless oversharing makes sense if the telling is a weapon. — u/EntertainmenschAt the very least Ambrose would find ways to get back at everyone involved with the incident at his room. Devi would be finished with the University and other authorities going after her. The Maer would be in trouble with his lady friend.
Comment adds concrete examples of named people who'd be harmed by the story. — u/Jackmcmac1I definitely think Kote is lying. There are threads of truth, which has been said. But if the stuff he is saying is true, he should be able to recall some form of those abilities.
Comment supports the lying premise via Kote's lost abilities. — u/cravecasealternative theory to your first; he plans on killing Chronicler before the story can be published lol.
CounterCounter: if Kvothe wanted to suppress the story he'd kill Chronicler, not distribute it. — u/kaleighdoscopeFirst and last theory are pretty weak but the second one seems really plausible
CounterCounter: a reader judges the targets theory weak. — u/MaxMacDaniels
