The theory§

This theory proposes that Skarpi dosed young Kvothe with plum bob during their meeting in Tarbean, a drug whose mechanism is only explained later in The Wise Man's Fear. The case rests on parallels between Kvothe's behaviour after each encounter: in both, the dose is delivered through a shared object and a touch, Kvothe immediately quotes his father, leaves the tavern upbeat, and afterward spends with uncharacteristic freedom. Skarpi slides Kvothe a halfpenny they both handle and rests a hand on his shoulder, mirroring the Modegan woman who later passes Kvothe a wet-gloved mug. A further oddity is that Skarpi, taken away by the guard, calls Kvothe by name though no name was exchanged, suggesting he came knowing who Kvothe was. The proposed purpose is benign: to break Kvothe's grief-stricken paralysis and push him out of Tarbean.
