The theory§

This reading identifies the seven members of Elodin's advanced naming class as the future Chandrian, with Kvothe himself becoming Haliax, the student Fenton becoming Cinder, and Denna possibly standing in for Lyra. It leans on the Cthaeh's remark that the Seven and the Chandrian are the same group under names that have drifted apart, and on Chronicler's report of a new red-haired terror in the night. The scheme reads the Chandrian signs and the lit-and-shadowed candles on the Mauthen pot as a depiction of a sympathy duel, and decodes Ferula, by which Haliax controls Cinder, as an iron ring of dominance. To reconcile Kvothe meeting himself as Haliax, the theory invokes a world whose time runs in cycles rather than a straight line, so the Lanre legend plays out both before and after the frame at the Waystone Inn, the same story repeating 'the same in their bones' but different in detail.

Evidence§

  • I believe the Chandrian to be the seven members of Elodin's advanced naming class.
OP's core claim identifying the Chandrian with Elodin's seven students.u/Only_Know_One_Story
  • You would do better to call them the Seven though. ‘Chandrian’ has so much folklore hanging off it after all these years. The names used to be interchangeable
Cthaeh quote: the Seven and Chandrian are the same group under drifted names.u/Only_Know_One_Story
  • Some are even saying that there is a new Chandrian. A fresh terror in the night. His hair as red as the blood he spills.
    Chronicler's report supports Kvothe-as-Haliax via red hair.u/Only_Know_One_Story
  • I believe this is a depiction of the sympathy duel between Kvothe and Fenton. Fenton's loss of the duel and the turning of his candle to cinder yields the name Cinder
Reads the Mauthen pot candles as the duel that names Fenton as Cinder.u/Only_Know_One_Story
  • Haliax also calls cinder Ferula, which clearly exerts control over him. Fe = iron, ferrule = metal ring. Ferula therefore means iron ring.
Decodes Ferula as iron ring, the means of Haliax's dominance over Cinder.u/Only_Know_One_Story
  • The reference to ramston steel in the quote above kind of sells this for me- the link between Kvothe and Ramston Steel (his alar, the knife he buys from the timker etc.) have been well discussed here…
Comment adds Ramston steel as a Kvothe-Haliax link.u/Jeffrobodean
  • it's not time travel, the world's time is on a cycle! The stories are happening again because Kvothe was born and the events repeat. Different in details but the same in their bones.
Comment refines the mechanism: cyclical time, not time travel.u/GoldenTabaxi
  • Kvothe is haliax? So kvothe met himself? Somehow I doubt it.
CounterCounter doubting Kvothe could meet himself as Haliax.u/Merax75
  • I'm not sure why people keep repeating this recently, but bone tar causes RED fire.
    CounterCounter correcting a blue-fire claim, undercutting Chandrian-sign reasoning.u/LostInStories222
