Denna Is the Inverse Mirror of Kvothe, on a Parallel Revenge Journey

plausible connection · popularity 69 · 1 source thread

Denna mirrors Kvothe as his opposite: where the Chandrian wronged him, the Amyr wronged her, with demons guiding her path.

About: Denna, Kvothe

Also involves: The Chandrian, The Amyr

The theory§

This theory frames Denna as Kvothe's reciprocal: the two walk parallel journeys that run in opposite directions. Where the Chandrian destroyed Kvothe's family and set him hunting them, the Amyr are cast as the faction that wronged Denna and the object of her own buried revenge, with dark patrons guiding her path as benefactors and luck guide his. The harsh reading Denna often receives is attributed to the narration being Kvothe's alone; told from her side, Kvothe would look as frustrating and evasive as she does to him. Supporting the inversion, Denna is repeatedly the wiser of the two, right where Kvothe is wrong, and she pursues written magic and secret books much as he pursues the Chandrian under cover of scholarship. The pairing maps onto other dualities, El'the the listener against E'lir the see-er, and the theory anticipates their crossing paths ending in betrayal or sacrifice, possibly engineered through the Cthaeh.

Evidence§

  • Denna and Kvothe are on similar journeys—except they’re opposites of each other. Kvothe’s family was killed by the Chandrian, while Denna was likely killed by the Amyr. Kvothe is seeking revenge against the Chandrian, and Denna is seeking revenge against the Amyr.
OP's core claim: parallel but inverted revenge journeys, Chandrian vs Amyr.u/Lucky_Grapefruit
  • Just as there are angels helping Kvothe along his path, there are probably demons guiding Denna on hers.
OP extends inversion: benevolent guides for him, dark patrons for her.u/Lucky_Grapefruit
  • People dislike Denna because the story is told from Kvothe’s perspective. If it were told from Denna’s point of view, we might find Kvothe just as frustrating.
OP argues harsh reading of Denna stems from one-sided narration.u/Lucky_Grapefruit
  • She was right to suggest giving the draccus ALL of the denner resin, instead of the 2/3rds that Kvothe winds up using. She was right to tell Kvothe to buy what a tinker offers to you. She teaches Kvothe how to hold a knife. … She is going to cities to read their secret books, like Kvothe says he should do.
Comment adds evidence Denna is the wiser one, right where Kvothe is wrong.u/chainsawx72
  • It explains why she's looking for written magic. … Denna uses written magic as an excuse to ask about the Amyr, and the Chandrian found her. … Since she has common cause with the Chandrian, it explains why she has cinder as a patron … It also explains why she keeps bumping into kvothe everywhere they go. They're both looking for related things
Refines theory: explains Denna's written-magic pursuit, Cinder patron, and repeated crossings.u/Danger_Breakfast
  • Denna is El'the. A **listener**. Kvothe is E'lir, a **see-er**. As we learn from the fable of Jax and the moon, listening is more important.
Adds another duality mapping the inversion onto El'the/E'lir.u/qoou
  • Sadly their affection for one another is likely the vector by which the Cthaeh will manipulate Kvothe into killing a King … Literally every story we know where the Cthaeh manipulates someone it is a tragic love story where the woman dies and the man lives to dramatically alter the world for it.
Supports predicted betrayal/sacrifice ending engineered via the Cthaeh.u/Sandal-Hat
  • > Denna was likely killed by the Amyr. [citation needed]
CounterCounter: challenges the central claim that the Amyr killed Denna as unsupported.u/endor-pancakes
