KKC Characters Are Built From Blended Egyptian and Greek Gods
Denna's braid, Auri, and Chronicler map onto Egyptian moon-god mythology, with Kvothe as Horus.
About: Kvothe, Denna, Chronicler
Also involves: Auri, Selitos, The Moon, Felurian, The Lackless Box
The theory§
This theory reads the Kingkiller Chronicle as woven through with Egyptian moon-god mythology layered over Greek figures. Denna's single braid is interpreted as the 'sidelock of youth,' the Horus-lock worn by Khonsu, the Egyptian moon god, which in Egyptian art marks the legitimate heir of Osiris. Chronicler, whose true name is Devan Lochees, is cast as Thoth, the other Egyptian moon god and the deity who restored the shattered Eye of Horus; this parallels Chronicler's potential role in restoring Kvothe's lost 'dark and changing eye,' which the theory frames as punishment for breaking the oath Kvothe swore to Denna 'by the ever-moving moon.' Kvothe is identified with Horus and the reborn Osiris, while Selitos is read as a fusion of Set and Helios, supported by sun imagery and the name-shift pattern Selitos minus Set yielding Elios. An added thread connects Auri kissing Kvothe's holly-coated forehead to the star that appears on his brow during the battle with Felurian, echoing the Eye of Horus.
Evidence§
First the braid. It's a Khonsu reference.
OP's opening claim: Denna's braid points to the Egyptian moon god Khonsu. — u/SmurphiliciousKhonsu is typically depicted as a mummy with the symbol of childhood, a **sidelock of hair** … The sidelock of youth (also called a Horus lock, Prince's lock, Princess' lock, lock of childhood or side braid) … symbolically indicates that the wearer is a legitimate heir of Osiris.
Grounds the braid claim: the sidelock marks a legitimate heir of Osiris. — u/SmurphiliciousThe Great Debunker, Devan Lochees. Also of Lackless blood. … In the central Osiris myth, Thoth gives Isis the words to restore her husband … The second role that Thoth / The Chronicler fulfills has to do with the Eye of Horus (Horus would be Kvothe).
Maps Chronicler onto Thoth, the moon god who restores, with Kvothe as Horus. — u/SmurphiliciousI think that's what Kvothe is doing with the Chronicler. He's restoring Kvothe's dark and changing eye. … I don't think Kvothe can see Names anymore. Maybe as punishment for betraying his promise to Denna.
Applies the Eye-of-Horus restoration to Kvothe's lost name-sight, framed as broken-oath punishment. — u/SmurphiliciousI swear it by the ever-moving moon.
The moon-oath to Denna that the theory ties to Kvothe's punishment. — u/SmurphiliciousSelitos is a combination of the Egyptian god Set and Greek god Helios. Selitos.
Extends the blended-gods pattern: Selitos as Set fused with Helios. — u/SmurphiliciousAuri also kissed Kvothe on his forehead with her *holly* coated lips. This is where the star appears on his forehead in the battle with Felurian.
Comment adds corroborating detail linking Auri's kiss to the forehead star. — u/milbaderI don’t think that Pat is going to copy directly from the mythology, but I like the way it links together rather well
CounterCommenter endorses the connection but cautions against expecting a direct one-to-one mapping. — u/More-Cryptographer26
