The Thrice-Locked Chest May Hold Kvothe's Own Hidden Name
Kote's tale of a high king's name sealed in glass, copper, and iron may hint that his own name is locked in his chest.
About: The Thrice-Locked Chest, Kvothe
Also involves: Naming, Chronicler, The Lackless Box, The Cthaeh, The Chandrian, Waystone Inn
The theory§
Drawn from the frame where Kote spins the Chronicler legend for Old Cob, this theory flags the storybook detail that a high king hid his name in a book of glass, inside a box of copper, inside a great iron chest, so that no one could control him through it. Coming from Kote's own mouth, the layered-vessel image is read as a veiled hint to his own situation: his true name sealed inside the thrice-locked Roah-wood chest in his room at the Waystone, copper being one of its locks. The reading explains why Kote can no longer open the chest, play music, or work magic, and why he could safely tell Chronicler his secret Adem name Maedre — because the name that truly binds him is locked away. It connects to the broader pattern of names hidden in boxes: Jax trapping part of the moon's name, and the Lackless box doing likewise. A shared citrus-and-leather scent across the Cthaeh's tree, the Lackless box, and the chest is offered as a thread binding the three sealed things together.
Evidence§
I was rereading TWMF when I noticed this line in a part of the frame story where Bast and Kote are spewing the legend of the Chronicler to Old Cob
OP frames the source: a frame-story line spoken by Kote himself. — u/Nailed710The high king’s name is written in a book of glass, hidden in a box of copper. And that box is locked away in a great iron chest where nobody can touch it.
Core textual detail: a name sealed in nested glass, copper, and iron vessels. — u/Nailed710it is from Kote himself, and perhaps he is hinting to his own name locked away in his chest, suggesting one of the Chandrain or another enemy of his knows his true name and has power over him
OP's central claim: Kote hints his own name is locked in his chest. — u/Nailed710When Kvothe approaches the Cthaeh, he whiffs something lemony. … When Kvothe sniffs the Lackless box, he detects something leathery/lemony … there's a citrusy scent in the air. … you can be fairly sure the chest, the box, and the Cthaeh or the Cthaeh's tree are all related.
Adds scent evidence linking chest, Lackless box, and Cthaeh's tree. — u/Kit-CarsonI think the chest is like the box that Jax traps the name of the moon in. We're told that he can only fit part of the name in the box. … Kvothe is missing part of his name as well: v,h.
Connects to Jax's name-trapping box; Kvothe missing part of his name. — u/macravinthey are very explicit that it's is secret and he should not tell anyone else. Why would he then tell the Chronicle … I believe that the only reason he was not afraid to tell his name is because he knows it is in someplace safe.
Explains why Kote safely revealed Maedre: the binding name is locked away. — u/vexkovThat would explain why he can't open it back because he can't say the name of it when he calls for edro trying to open it but can not. Nor can he play the lute anymore … Probably not even sympathy
Theory explains Kote's lost abilities: opening chest, music, magic. — u/vexkovChronicler says it's nonsense, but was there a high king … I feel like that story is loaded and we just don't have the context.
CounterCounter/caveat: in-story the tale is dismissed as nonsense, context lacking. — u/kaz3e
