The draccus is an enormous, powerful, lizard-like beast. It breathes blue fire, its breath carrying so much force and heat that the energy alone can kill a person nearby. Its scales are laced with natural iron, and its body contains organic iron. Its scale and aspect are dragon-like, though it resists the label of dragon.

Description§

The draccus is a large, fire-breathing beast that Kvothe confronts near Trebon during the aftermath of the Mauthen farm wedding massacre. It eats wood and charcoal and is addicted to denner resin, consuming it raw from the trees. Kvothe attempts to kill it by feeding it cooked denner resin, using roughly two-thirds of his supply despite Denna's advice to use all of it. The plan misfires: the drugged draccus grows more erratic and dangerous and rampages. During the encounter Kvothe and Denna scramble onto a greystone gate of three stones near a hill fort, where a Chandrian vase is later unearthed. The draccus breathes blue fire, and the means by which it produces flame is unknown; its scales are laced with natural iron, and its body contains organic iron. Chronicler had written a book, 'The Mating Habits of the Common Draccus,' and Kvothe references Chronicler's theories on how the creature makes fire. In the frame story Kvothe asks listeners whether they would call the beast a dragon, a label Chronicler declines to confirm, saying he compiled the stories and did not know what to believe.
