Denner resin is sweet and candy-like in flavour, eaten rather than smoked, and chewed like toffee. It is potent enough that a fraction of a poisoning dose is many times lethal for a person. Its euphoric, numbing, deeply addictive effect defines it more than any colour or texture.

Description§

Denner resin is a potent, highly addictive narcotic of the Four Corners; those dependent on it are called sweet-eaters, and its candy-like sweetness recurs in the imagery around it. Its most prominent use in Kvothe's account is his scheme to kill the draccus near Trebon, where he doses it with roughly six times what he calculates to be a lethal amount, settling on two-thirds of his supply while Denna urges him to use all of it. The plan misfires when the draccus, its belly full of charcoal, survives. On a separate occasion Kvothe treats a denner overdose by feeding the victim handfuls of charcoal from a fire pit to absorb the drug. The name denner deliberately echoes Denna's, and the related name Dennais belongs to Threpe; the resin's sweetness is so marked that bright, perfect white teeth are a recognized physical sign of a sweet-eater.
