The Cthaeh may be a surviving black dragon acting as a Fae drug lord, with Cinder as an indebted addict-client.

The theory§

This theory holds that the Cthaeh is not literally a tree but a surviving black wyrm operating as a Fae drug lord, with Cinder cast as an indebted addict-client. It builds in stages: the Cthaeh states outright that it is no tree, dragons are confirmed to have existed in the Fae though Bast believes none remain, and the dark, glass-smooth, lemon-and-spice-scented wood of the Cthaeh's tree is matched to roah, the Loeclos box, and Kvothe's thrice-locked chest, and likened to black draccus scales. The Cthaeh's line about setting a young pup snapping at Cinder's heels is reframed as the dunning of a debtor, explaining Cinder's pursuit of gold royals as repayment. The addictive-marking motif is reinforced by Felurian's silver tree, whose fruit marked the eyes and mouths of all who tasted it, suggesting these strange trees brand their users to keep them returning. The reading meets the objection that a tree-bound being has nothing to spend its money on, and that it sends Kvothe toward the very similar Sword Tree, hinting the cutting may be the tree's own work.

Evidence§

  • The Cthaeh is a Black Wyrm candyman. Cinder was his regular client and still owes him a lot of money
OP's core thesis: Cthaeh is a black wyrm drug dealer and Cinder an indebted client.u/BlueVCoin
  • Maybe it amuses me to set a young pup like you snapping at his heels. … This is why Cinder is trying his best to collect enough gold royals to pay back the Cthaeh in time because he knows that he'll send someone snapping at his heels.
Reframes the Cthaeh's threat as dunning a debtor, explaining Cinder's pursuit of gold.u/BlueVCoin
  • And dragons?” Bast shook his head. “Not that I’ve ever heard. **Not anymore** …
Establishes dragons existed in the Fae but are believed extinct, leaving room for a survivor.u/BlueVCoin
  • I am no tree. No more than is a man a chair. I am the Cthaeh.
The Cthaeh itself denies being a tree, supporting it being a hidden creature.u/BlueVCoin
  • It was made of roah, a rare, heavy wood, dark as coal and smooth as polished glass. … It was one of the draccus’ scales, **smooth and black**
Matches the Cthaeh tree's black glassy wood to roah and to black draccus scales.u/BlueVCoin
  • only a dennerling would speak to the Cthaeh.
Felurian's term casts the Cthaeh's visitors as addicts, supporting the drug-trade framing.u/BlueVCoin
  • all these weird ass trees have something that make it easy to mark who ate it by their eyes and mouth. … Making the thing addictive *would* drive people to keep coming back.
Comment adds Felurian's silver tree as evidence these trees brand addicted users.u/ImJustAVG
  • the Cthaeh suspiciously sends Kvothe to a very similar tree in the Sword Tree for me to ignore that the tree might be doing the cutting.
CounterCounter: the tree itself may kill the butterflies, undercutting the dragon-breath claim.u/ImJustAVG
  • what would the Cthaeh need the money for? He cannot move away from the tree, so he can't spend it anywhere.
CounterCounter: a tree-bound being has nothing to spend money on, weakening the drug-lord motive.u/HelixQuo
