The Chandrian whose sign is rot and decay

Appearance§

Usnea's sign manifests in her surroundings rather than in any fixed portrait of her form: wood rots, organic matter breaks down, and corpse-like decay spreads where she passes. As one of the Chandrian she carries telltale signs that flicker and unsettle those nearby. The books give no confirmed description of her face or build.

Description§

Usnea is one of the seven Chandrian, identified in the children's rhyme by the line 'Usnea lives in nothing but decay.' Her sign is rot, decay, and the corruption of organic matter: where she passes, wood and flesh break down and corpse-like decay sets in. At the Mauthen farm her sign appeared as rotting, decayed wood, alongside Cyphus's blue flame and Stercus's rusted iron. She is named for decay in Shehyn's song among the Adem as well. Like the other Chandrian, she is bound to the symbolic curse that followed the betrayal of the seven cities, and she is named in the deep-name litany. The name itself is shared with a real beard-like lichen historically used as a folk medicine.
