Kvothe's Eight Rings From the Children's Rhyme Map Onto the Individual Chandrian

fringe connection · popularity 129 · 1 source thread

The rings in Kvothe's rhyme correspond one-to-one with named Chandrian by element and trait.

About: Kvothe, The Chandrian

Also involves: Cinder, Stercus, Grey Dalcenti, Alenta, Usnea, Pale Alaxel, Meluan Lackless, Naming, Elodin, Denna, Felurian

The theory§

This theory maps the rings named in the children's rhyme about Kvothe — stone, iron, amber, wood and bone on his first hand; blood, air, ice, flame and the nameless ring unseen on his second — onto the individual Chandrian by element and trait. Iron is assigned to Stercus, who is 'in thrall of iron'; the ring of ice, flawed within, to Ferule, who is Cinder; flame to Cyphus, who 'bears the blue flame'; bone to Usnea, who 'lives in nothing but decay'; and the pale wood ring that Meluan Lackless unknowingly gives Kvothe to Pale Alenta, who 'brings the blight', echoing the rot at the troupe's massacre and the Mauthen wedding. The amber ring is tied to Grey Dalcenti through the etymology of ambergris ('gray amber') and his silence, though this link is challenged since ambergris is named after amber rather than the reverse. Kvothe himself is read as the blood ring, the rumoured 'new Chandrian' whose hair is 'as red as the blood he spills', and the nameless ring is read as void or silence. The scheme connects to a wider framework in which the seven Chandrian plus the angels Andan and Ordal form nine, with Kvothe arriving as a tenth.

Evidence§

  • Kvothe's rings align with the Chandrian.
OP's core thesis: the rhyme's rings each map onto a Chandrian.u/Smurphilicious
  • Iron is Stercus … Stercus is in thrall of iron.
Iron ring matched to Stercus via his stated thrall to iron.u/Smurphilicious
  • Kvothe's wood ring is the wood ring that Meluan "gifted" him, comprised of pale wood, so that'd be Pale Alenta. Plus she *hates* him so the blight / crumbling wood at the troupe and wedding massacre lines up nicely
Pale wood ring tied to Pale Alenta, who 'brings the blight'.u/Smurphilicious
  • The bone ring makes sense to pair with Usnea … Usnea lives in nothing but decay.
Bone ring matched to Usnea via her association with decay.u/Smurphilicious
  • The ring of ice with the flaw would be Ferule … Ferule chill and dark of eye.
Flawed ice ring matched to Ferule (Cinder), chill and dark.u/Smurphilicious
  • Kvothe is "the new Chandrian" … His hair as red as the blood he spills … So maybe he's the blood ring.
Kvothe read as the blood ring, the rumored new Chandrian.u/Smurphilicious
  • A ring without name might be Silence
Refines the nameless ring as Silence.u/Aduialion
  • Ambergris gets its name from Amber, not the other way around. And you wouldn't be able to make a ring out of it.
CounterCounters OP's etymology linking amber ring to Grey Dalcenti.u/Joscientist
  • Did you overlook the ring of stone?
CounterCounter: OP left the stone ring unassigned.u/s_w_jagermanjensen
  • the nine 'angels' are loosely based on the seven chandrian plus Andan and Ordal … With Kvothe theoretically becoming the 10th, this theory fits very nicely
Context: ties scheme to nine angels framework with Kvothe as tenth.u/chainsawx72

Tier reasoning§

tier downgraded: one-to-one ring-to-Chandrian mapping is mostly elemental guesswork
