Pale Alaxel
“The shadow-cloaked Lord of the Seven from the Adem's Chandrian tale”
also known as Alaxel, Lord Alaxel, Lord of the Seven
Appearance§
Alaxel is described through the Adem verse rather than direct physical detail: he is the lord of the seven who 'bears the shadow's hame,' cloaking himself in shadow. This matches the depiction of Haliax, whose features are perpetually wreathed and obscured by darkness so that even in full light his face cannot be clearly seen. He is characterized by the litany 'Hated. Hopeless. Sleepless. Sane.'
Description§
Alaxel is the name given to the lord of the seven in the Adem's version of the Chandrian tale, the shadow-cloaked figure who 'bears the shadow's hame.' The Adem verse lists the seven and their signs before naming Alaxel last as their hated, hopeless, sleepless, sane lord. Because Skarpi's story names Lanre as Haliax while the Adem tale names only Alaxel and makes no mention of Lanre, Alaxel is taken as the Adem name corresponding to Haliax, lord of the Chandrian. In the Adem framing there is an enemy who poisons seven traitors against their empire; six betray their cities while one remembers the Lethani, leaving that city unbetrayed. The Chandrian are bound by their true names, which is why speaking the deep names is dangerous and lures them.
