Kvothe May Spread a Sexually Transmitted Blight After His Time With Felurian

fringe mechanism · popularity 78 · 1 source thread

Kvothe's sexual encounters after Felurian could be spreading a Fae-origin plague or blight across the Four Corners.

About: Kvothe, Felurian

Also involves: The Fae, Alenta, Edema Ruh, The Four Corners of Civilization, Pale Alaxel

The theory§

This theory holds that Kvothe's transformation in the Fae is not merely sexual education but the seeding of a catastrophe, and that his subsequent promiscuity across the Four Corners is a vector for a Fae-origin blight. It threads Felurian's near-fatal allure together with the figure of Pale Alenta, a bringer of blight in the world's old stories, and proposes that Felurian (or the Kvothe she remakes) carries something corrupting outward into the mortal world. The leap rests on a real pattern in the books: Kvothe leaves the Fae fundamentally changed, far more dangerous to those who lie with him, and the catastrophe he later causes remains the central unsolved wound of the frame story. The blight is figured less as literal disease than as a spreading ruin Kvothe carries unknowingly, an STD-as-metaphor for a man who is himself a plague that has not yet run its course.

Evidence§

  • The disaster Kvothe causes may be by spreading a sexually transmitted plague to every woman who spreads her legs for him and either his pale ass or Felurian's may actually be Pale Alenta, bringer of the blight.
OP's core thesis: Kvothe's promiscuity spreads a Fae blight tied to Pale Alenta.u/Bhaluun
  • Kvothe was changed in a noticeable way by his time with Felurian that the locals did not believe was falsifiable.
Felurian observably transformed Kvothe, giving him a recognizable Fae look.u/Bhaluun
  • Kvothe's sexual activity may spread the enemy's poison by transmitting a contagious disease directly affecting the afflicted's personal health.
First proposed mechanism: a direct contagious disease transmitted through sex.u/Bhaluun
  • Felurian is a prime candidate to be an infection vector, even for diseases potentially invisible in both her and Kvothe; She’s a literal nymph who has been around for millenia, sex is part of her nature, and she's had countless partners with no protection in sight, all of whom known to Kvothe died within the year after leaving her.
Felurian named as the vector; her past lovers all died within a year.u/Bhaluun
  • We’ve also already been given strong hints of an STD associated with the Edema Ruh generally, the Edamete Tass/Edema Drip … The Edamete tass, a disease you get from whores.
Books already establish an in-world STD, grounding the disease premise.u/Bhaluun
  • Reason **(D)** could be the most simple but staggering transformation, breaking the heart of one girl to break the world itself. … We’ve already seen it poisoning his relationship with Denna, the tension and distance caused by both his time with Felurian and his clumsy feet among the women of Temerant are noticeable.
Alternative mechanism: emotional ruin, his womanizing already poisons Denna.u/Bhaluun
  • This guy fucks, but this guys still gotta learn how to love.
Commenter reads his promiscuity as contrast to romantic failure with Denna, not plague.u/rosamy1994
  • I doubt Kvothe's blight is an outpouring of bastards; he allegedly chews an herb that keeps him infertile.
CounterCounter: an infertility herb undercuts the fertility/offspring spread mechanism.u/eritain
  • your focus on STD seems to me clearly influenced by the world you/we are living in. I really, really hope that PR will spare us any of this in book 3!!!!
CounterCounter: the STD reading is reader projection, unlikely authorial intent.u/andcheck
