The Angels Use the Wind to Both Save and Punish Kvothe

fringe mechanism · popularity 105 · 1 source thread

The wind that repeatedly rescues and thwarts Kvothe is the angels acting on their charge to reward or punish what they witness.

About: Kvothe, Naming

Also involves: The Amyr, The Chandrian, Ambrose Jakis, Abenthy, Cinder, Tarbean

The theory§

This theory reads the wind that repeatedly intervenes in Kvothe's life not as his own unconscious Naming but as the work of angels carrying out their charge to 'punish or reward only what you yourself witness'. The same wind that turns an assassin's arrow aside and steadies Kvothe on a rooftop also slams a window shut to trap him in Ambrose's rooms and forces a leaf into his mouth to stop him speaking the name Ferule, behaving like a moral agent that both saves and corrects him. The reading links these episodes to other apparent angelic interventions: the great bird with wings of fire and shadow that warms Kvothe as he freezes in Tarbean, and the dream-encounter that reveals truths about the Chandrian and Amyr. A standing objection notes that several of these gusts come right after Kvothe has himself called the wind in anger, so the simpler explanation is that he called the wind and forgot, a budding and not-fully-conscious control. The wind is likewise observed steadying Denna away from speaking too freely of her own name, which extends the protective pattern beyond Kvothe.

Evidence§

  • We are told the purpose of the angels is to judge only what they witness. … you must punish or reward only what you yourself witness from this day forth
OP's premise: angels' charge is to punish or reward only what they witness.u/chainsawx72
  • Most of us have noticed that the wind saves Kvothe's life. The wind saves Kvothe from an arrow. … A gust of wind saved me. His arrow struck harsh yellow sparks from a stone outcrop not two feet from my head.
Wind acts protectively, deflecting a lethal arrow from Kvothe.u/chainsawx72
  • the wind also 'turns on' Kvothe and traps him in Ambrose's room… the wind caught the window and slammed it closed above my head
Same wind punishes, trapping Kvothe in Ambrose's room: a moral agent, not just a savior.u/chainsawx72
  • the wind seems to protect Kvothe from hearing or saying the wrong sort of things. The wind stops Kvothe from saying Ferule. … I coughed in surprise as the wind forced a leaf straight into my mouth, causing me to choke and splutter.
Wind corrects Kvothe, stopping him from speaking a dangerous name.u/chainsawx72
  • An angel saves Kvothe from freezing. … I imagined death in the form of a great bird with wings of fire and shadow. It hovered above, watching patiently, waiting for me. … the great bird settled its burning wings around me. I imagined a delicious warmth.
Links pattern to another angelic intervention: the burning bird warming Kvothe in Tarbean.u/chainsawx72
  • The wind also seems to warn Denna against talking too much about ***her own*** name … The wind stirred the hanging branches of the willow as she cocked her head to look at me.
Commenter extends the protective pattern beyond Kvothe to Denna and her name.u/czechancestry
  • One wonders if Kvothe was already calling the name of the wind in these moments, subconsciously. When Ambrose takes his lute he calls the wind with fury. … I don't personally think these are angel intervention moments.
CounterCounter: simpler explanation is Kvothe's own subconscious Naming, not angels.u/Katter
  • I would be extremely surprised if there ends up being a literal entity behind it. … It would frankly cheapen the experience if we discovered some explicit plan or intentionality behind the wind, like a bunch of Angels watching Kvothe and involving themselves in his affairs.
CounterCounter: wind is poetic allusion to Kvothe's connection, not literal angelic agents.u/DanielNoWrite
